Duties

  • Prepares or gathers all necessary tools and equipment for project or assignment
  • Prepares worksite and covers work areas with protective materials to prevent damage from soil, grease, or stain marks.
  • Replacement of electric light bulbs and fluorescent/incandescent tubes and exit lights throughout the building.
  • Cleans, oils, and greases all tools and equipment.
  • Receive work orders, oral instructions, and wiring diagrams that indicate the nature of the repair or installation to be made, the layout and placement of circuitry.
  • Makes repairs that can be accomplished by removing, cleaning, replacing, packing, and sealing defective parts of utility, supply, and disposal systems such as dirty traps, sections of broken tile pipe, and leaky drains, steam regulation system for each room and the Air Handlers.
  • Completes minor plumbing repairs by repairing/unclogging plugged toilets, etc.
  • Completes needed repairs such as hook up to installed systems such as water heaters, disposal units, and faucets.
  • Measure, cut, construct, install, repair, modify metal structures, composite, and wood substitute items where specific fit and accuracy are within allowable limits to produce a serviceable product.
  • Follows specific instructions and use templates, or preplanned, or precut materials.
  • Repairs damaged wall covering, paint, and touchup rooms.
  • Moves furniture as part of installation or set-up activities, and perform various tasks of a maintenance worker.
  • Assist in assembling and installing or repairing items or structures.
  • Performs first echelon preventive maintenance on EMS equipment such as replacing belts, bolts, screws, etc.
  • Measure, cut, bend, and thread pipe and tile, and how to caulk and seal such things as elbows, union joints, tile pipe, faucets, and shower drains.
  • Replaces acoustical ceiling tiles, cleaning HVAC grills/outlets/window air conditioner filters.
  • Tightens loose handrails.
  • Perform basic airflow test on positive or negative pressure rooms and validates the performance of monitoring e equipment coordinates and follows up on repairs for items such as beds to maximize up time and reduce hallway clutter.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Shifts and hours vary and may change based on the needs of the service; must be able to rotate to different shifts as needed

Physical Requirements: Makes repairs from work stands and other hard-to-reach places. Must stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, stretch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Uses hand and power tools and equipment that may require holding tools in uncomfortable positions for extended periods. Frequently lifts supplies, parts and equipment that weigh up to 20 pounds. May lift and move heavy and bulky materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts or moves heavier items with assistance from other workers.

Working Conditions: Generally works indoors in the medical center, but may also work outdoors, sometimes in bad weather. Work areas may be noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy. There is frequent chance for minor injuries such as bruises, cuts, and scrapes, burns, sprains, etc. The use of safety gloves, safety glasses, ear plugs, or other safety equipment and protective clothing may be necessary to avoid severe injuries. The possibility exists for exposure to communicable diseases and the Maintenance Worker must be well versed in infection control procedures and techniques. Universal precautions must be observed at all times. May be exposed to the fumes, splashes or residues of a wide variety of commercial and industrial maintenance chemicals some of which may be toxic, caustic or acidic and could cause burns, skin irritation or allergic reaction while mixing, using, or disposing of these chemicals

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
