Job description

Our National Mapping Service (NMS) unit helps government make smarter decisions with our world-leading location expertise.

To achieve our exciting remit, we’ll find new ways to apply our expertise. We’ll reach out to a wider range of customers and stakeholders than ever before. And we’ll build deeper connections with them; aligning with their goals and really understanding their needs.

NMS is evolving. Our innovative strategy begins with one key aim. To maximise the opportunities from our core public sector business by delighting our customers.

Join us and you’ll have an opportunity to make an impact. To empower projects that deliver real-world benefits across Britain. To hear our customers say they couldn’t have done it without us. And to be central to OS’s vision: to be recognised as world leaders in geospatial services; creating location insight for positive impact.

About the role

Are you resilient and self-motivated? Do you like being outdoors, are happy working in the built environment, in all weathers, operate remotely, standalone and have an attention to detail?
We’re looking to add to our geographical spread of Field Surveyors, with some key locations we need people to be based, various areas of mainland Britain, with the ability to work nationwide. As an OS Surveyor you will plan, collect, assess, edit and maintain geospatial information using relevant survey methods to meet customer requirements.

Are you keen to be part of the field capture side to the geospatial information industry, maybe a surveyor, or keen to learn? You may have qualifications, equivalent experience, or have a passion for this type of work. We are open to conversations.

What we’re looking for

You may have some, maybe not all, of the criteria below, but will be willing to learn.

  • Ability for working outdoors in all weathers and conditions
  • Able to deliver to defined requirements/specifications
  • Spatial awareness
  • Good learner and a desire to continuously improve
  • Good communication and problem-solving skills
  • Good organisational skills, good at working independently
  • Team player, particularly as part of a dispersed team
  • Able to travel, with overnight stays in Great Britain
  • Full driving license

Desirable skills

  • Geospatially focused, academically qualified or work experience specially using geographic information systems (GIS)
  • Previously experience working with surveying equipment
  • Ability to use and understand geodata, structure, attribution, capture and edit platforms for geospatial uses
  • Hold a current CSCS card
  • Membership of a relevant professional body

  • This role is based remotely, from home, then travel from there
  • Surveyors need to live in a specified location, or willing to relocate to an agreed area before joining the field or on completion of initial training
