Background/Overview:

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) operates a number of remote stations in the Antarctic. These stations rely on a number of communication systems including HF, C-band VSAT and Iridium. As well as this, BAS operates radars investigating the Aurora and the upper atmosphere as well as ice penetrating radars looking at the ice sheets and the underlying rock. This position will contribute to the operation and maintenance of this broad range of equipment.

An ideal candidate will have a background in electronics and understand the principles of RF engineering. They will also have organizational/administration skills and a willingness to learn. From this base we would like to grow the other skills needed for the job. Specialist skills training will be provided by the team or externally if required.

Purpose:

To assist with the administration, maintenance and installation of all forms of communications equipment at BAS stations and in the field. Support, operate and maintain Atmospheric and Ice Radar scientific electronics equipment.

It is not expected that candidates will have all the skills required for the broad range of job requirements. Training will be carried out in areas where skills need to be strengthened or newly acquired.

Duties:

  • Assist with the administration and maintenance of communications systems on ships and stations
  • Remote support for communications systems including, but not limited to, VSAT, Iridium, InReach, HF, VHF and AIS.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of Atmospheric and Ice Radar systems.
  • Working with and supporting engineering colleagues in Cambridge, and in Polar Regions to deliver projects in a professional manner.
  • Provide support and technical knowledge to communications, scientific and wider BAS projects while ensuring the integrity of communications now and in the future.
  • Other duties as appropriate.

Salary: £31,931.00-£39,915.00 per year
