The Opportunity
Are you a skilled Aerospace Mechanical Engineer with experience in transmissions?
If you also have a proactive approach and are a motivated individual with good communication skills who can work well in a team this could be the opportunity for you.
As an Aerospace Mechanical Engineer working in our Helicopter Division you will be supporting both the UK and Italian geographies so although based in the UK there is the opportunity to work on our full product range and travel to other international sites.
As part of the Transmissions Systems Team, you will be involved in activities across our wide product range encompassing conventional helicopters, tilt rotors and unmanned air systems.
At Leonardo Helicopters, we are responsible for the design of the complete air vehicle and working within the team you will have the ability to participate in all phases of the product design life cycle from participating in leading edge innovation to supporting aging aircraft.
This role is based in Yeovil with the potential of hybrid working.
What you will do
As part of the Transmissions Systems Team, you will be involved with the following activities:
- Designing and developing the Helicopter gearbox components/assemblies (Gears, Casings, Bearing, Shafts, Seals, monitoring systems etc.)
- Communicating to, and supporting other areas of the business, i.e. Production, Manufacturing, Repair & Overhaul, Vendors or Suppliers, Customer Support and In-service/flight queries
- Supporting, co-originating and executing design and development activities for the Transmission Dynamic System

What we are looking for
To perform in the role you will need to work well in a team and be flexible and adaptable.
We really need you to have:
- A degree in mechanical design
- A knowledge of gears, bearings, casings, couplings and shafts
- Experience in 2D drafting and 3D modelling using CAD software (conceptual/detail & assemblies)
- Good knowledge of basic rules of mechanical design (dimensioning & tolerancing)
- The ability to prepare and generate reports relevant to the assigned activities
- A motivated and proactive approach with the ability to problem solve
- The ability to plan and execute tasks to achieve timescales and costs
It would be nice if you have:
- Previous experience in a Mechanical Design Engineering environment
- Evidence of working in a regulated environment with knowledge of airworthiness regulations e.g. MAA, EASA or FAA
- Experience in 3D CAD using CATIA V5 and FT&A package
- Knowledge of helicopter mechanical/transmission systems
- Basic knowledge and/or relevant experience in Stress and Fatigue analysis
- Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis software packages (Abacus or similar)
