The University of Virginia’s Facilities Management – Utilities Distribution team is seeking a Trades Assistant who will be part of a team responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA's infrastructure which includes 9 miles of steam and condensate, 7 miles of steam tunnel, 23 miles of heating water, 24 miles of chilled water, 41 miles of domestic water, 69 miles of stormwater, 26 miles of sanitary sewer and 5,000 structures, separators, inlets, and BMP’s.
Position Summary :
Trades Assistants support the work of licensed journey level mechanics, seniors, and supervisors while learning on the job. They help ensure the highest quality trade products for the University and Medical Center. They learn a skilled trade through a combination of on-the-job training, technical education, and classroom instruction, often through a formal apprenticeship program. Through their work and education, they become skilled and may become certified in a licensed and non-licensed trade. Training is varied and may consist of rotations throughout the department to provide a broad range of skills. Trades Assistants function in a learning capacity and operate under direct supervision.
Duties Include :
Assist skilled journey level mechanics in performing routine system maintenance, preventative maintenance, building, construction, equipment repairs, assessing problems, undertaking corrective actions, and site cleanup.
Respond to emergency calls, including nights and weekends, as needed.
Communicate with customers regarding the status of work order, providing additional support and problem solving, as needed.
Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations.
Develop an increasing familiarity with the skills and best practices of assigned trade.
Actively participate in classroom and on-the-job training.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.

Compensation:
Anticipated Hiring Range: $16.00 - $20.00 ($33,280 - $41,600 per year). T his is a full-time position with UVA benefits . Employee benefits package highlights include:

Physical Demands :
Employee will be required to lift various weights, climb ladders and stairs in order to complete jobs. The use of both hands and a repetitive motion will be required while performing duties.
