Job description

Job Purpose
To manage all data-driven research projects on behalf of the Principal Investigator [John Le Quesne], including providing specialist data expertise in the lung cancer/mesothelioma theme and being responsible for the creation/set up and/or operation of all databases to aid the delivery of research objectives specifically within tissue projects and associated Pathology data from within the NHSGG&C Biorepository. The de-identified data is handled to the highest standards of data protection and governance to preserve the patient privacy in the usage of service data for research purposes. In addition, the postholder will undertake a range of data-driven support activities in line with the College/Institute/School Strategy.
The Glasgow Tissue Research Facility supports a range of research projects which works closely with academics within Glasgow and beyond. The aim of this post is to provide centralised quality assured data acquisition to underpin research into common cancers, as a part of studies based in the CRUK Scotland Centre. The post holder will be based at the GTRF at the Queen Elizabeth University site but may be required to travel and work at the Central Campus and the Garscube Road campus on occasion.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Undertake data management and curation of databases for the key cancer themes as a member of the research group.
2. Provide in-depth data knowledge, solutions, and advice to the key cancer theme members to maximise the learning experience and/or contribute to the delivery of research objectives.
3. Work with various teams within the University, NHS Biorepository and Safe Haven teams to manage collective anonymised databases holding pathology data.
4. Design and create systems, protocols, algorithms, software development and/or other technical resources to support the delivery of research objectives, anonymisation and automation tasks.
5. Undertake moderately complex data analysis, identifying trends, problems or anomalies, and present findings clearly to research group and/or to wider audiences via presentations or within appropriate research publications.
6. Be responsible for the day-to-day management of and compliance with relevant Health and Safety and/or other specialist legal requirements. Maintain all necessary records in accordance with set requirements, keep up to date with developments or legal changes relevant to the work of the research group and advise and train group members as appropriate. Report any potential issues to the PI and/or relevant internal or external bodies timeously.
7. Collect, analyse and interpret data using standard procedures and ensure that accurate records are kept and databases are updated accordingly. Present findings accurately. This may include research and/or teaching related data.
8. Cooperate with team members to ensure data quality meets the highest standards, and that no identifiable patient information ever leaves the security bounds of the NHS.
9. Understand the data requirements of data research undertaken in the fields of pathology, clinical research and machine learning
10. Where relevant, and in consultation with relevant senior staff, ensure the safe and efficient functioning of the technical work-space and facilities. This includes, but is not limited to, supporting the completion of risk assessments and COSHH assessments, ensuring that all Health and Safety paperwork is completed timeously and recorded accurately, and implementing and adhering to all applicable health and safety policies, including specialist legal procedures for certain materials.
11. Undertake general administration as required.
12. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings/discussions and contribute to the wider College/Institute/School activities as required.
Knowledge / Qualifications
Essential
A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 7 [Advanced Higher / Scottish vocational Qualification level 3, Higher National Certificate] or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.
A2. Detailed technical knowledge and expertise in database management and data research analysis and must be skilled in interacting with electronic information systems and databases.
Desirable
B1. BSc Degree or equivalent in Computing, Data Analytics or related subject or equivalent experience
B2. Experience in SQL and familiar with the tools used to manage software development projects including modern source control and task management tools
B3. In-depth working knowledge of statistical packages and at least one programming language, preferably Python and / or R, SATA or SPSS
Skills
Essential
C1. Demonstrable in-depth IT skills, including proficient user of relevant specialist or bespoke software packages. A good working knowledge of Microsoft Access is also required
C2. Experience in the extraction, cleansing, and analysis of large datasets for research purposes
C3. Well-developed analytical and problem solving capability, including high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
C4. Proven interpersonal and communication skills.
C5. Excellent teamworking skills and where relevant to the post, supervisory or line management skills.
C6. Ability to plan and prioritise workload to meet competing demands.
C7. Experience of working in higher education, NHS, biomedical sciences, or with health-related data
C8. Significant analytical and problem-solving capability, including high degree of accuracy and attention to detail when dealing with complex data
C9. Experience of planning and organising own workload to meet the needs of service users.
Desirable
D1. Experience of supporting data-driven projects within a business/IT environment using project management methodologies
D2. Experience of understanding and interpreting complex technical requirements of service users and implementing appropriate methods of achieving their needs.
D3. Experience in database administration or ETL processes from production databases
D4. Experience of Data Protection and Privacy in the public sector
D5. Ability to learn and follow Standard Operating Procedures
D6. Evidence of continuous professional development
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 5, £24,715 - £28,929 per annum.
This post is full time, and has funding for up to 2 years
