You will join the highly skilled and experienced Community Safety department as a Team Manager, with all-year-round responsibility for the safeguarding of people and property. You will have proven experience of effectively leading and managing a team of operational staff in a busy, fast-paced higher education environment.
You will have sound judgement, with a practical and common-sense approach, enabling you to resolve often challenging situations quickly, ensuring you provide the very best in customer service at each opportunity. You should have a positive and enthusiastic attitude to lead by example, ensuring a firm, fair and consistent approach towards managing people. Additionally, you must be able to communicate effectively with people of all ages and from all backgrounds. You should be professional, courteous, and smart at all times, possess the highest degree of integrity, and be capable of making sound decisions under pressure when directing colleagues. Please note, as this role will involve driving University vehicles, to be covered by the University Vehicle Insurance Policy, you must be in possession of a full UK or EU equivalent licence, which has been in force for at least 1 year and have no serious driving convictions (any period of disqualification must have expired by at least 1 year).
You will be required to work a pattern of two days and two nights of 12 hours duration, followed by four days off, which equates to an average of 42 hours per week.
We offer an excellent salary that reflects the challenging nature of the role, and the professionalism we expect from our team. The salary range is between £37,876.00 to £43,111.00 depending on experience (made up from a base rate of £24,715.00, 5.5 hours of contractual overtime a week and a 25% shift allowance).

Job Description
To manage, lead, coach, train and develop a team of community safety officers to provide exceptional levels of safety, security, and customer service to the University community.
To support the wider community safety management team in achieving the aims and objectives contained within the Vision and Mission Statements for Community Safety, which align with the University’s Strategy and goals.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:
OPERATIONAL
- Manage and lead a team of community safety officers to ensure that an exceptional customer service is provided by prioritising tasks, delegating duties, and deploying staff effectively, based on available resources.
- Ensure minimum operational staffing levels are always achieved through effective planning and monitoring, including liaison with other team managers.
- Manage the team as ‘first responders’ to security-related incidents by accurately assessing the impact on people, property and reputation, through correct and timely decision making, and the effective deployment of staff, escalating only when necessary.
- Manage the delivery of emergency assistance to anyone within the University community through the effective deployment of staff and facilitating the arrival of external emergency services.
- Plan with partners to ensure special events are organised effectively in advance and required staffing levels are achieved e.g. Graduation ceremonies and open days.
- Work collaboratively with other community safety team managers to ensure consistent approaches to operational procedures are adopted across the department.
- Manage the annual leave process for the team, making sure minimum operational staffing levels are achieved and that there is a fair and consistent approach to allocating time off.
- Give evidence at University disciplinary hearings and criminal court, as required.
LEADERSHIP AND PERFORMANCE
- Lead from the front - act as a positive role model, providing leadership, coaching and direction to the team, to achieve individual, team and departmental objectives.
- Provide motivation, encouragement, and regular feedback, recognising and celebrating team and individual accomplishments and exceptional performance.
- Create an environment that fosters trust, open communication, creative thinking, and cohesive team working.
- Monitor and manage sickness absence, providing support to encourage good attendance at work.
- Manage performance, discipline, and grievances, complying with University policy.
- Take an active role in the recruitment and selection of new staff.
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
- Develop the team to reach their full potential by identifying training and development needs, through regular operational assessment, one-to-one feedback meetings, linked to the annual review process.
- Oversee continual refresher training and operational assessment for the whole team.
- Manage induction and probation training for new staff.
- Monitor the timely completion of relevant training of the team to ensure compliance, particularly in relation to GDPR, the protection of personal data and IT security.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
- Attend monthly managers’ meetings, including when off work if possible, and balance time off in lieu, accordingly.
- Produce monthly reports to link to Key Performance Indicators to prove effective delivery against set targets.
- Manage compliance with departmental procedures and University policies.
- Manage operational activities to comply with health and safety legislation for the protection of team members, students, staff, and visitors.
Periodically, review operational policies and procedures to ensure compliance with relevant legislation, such as the Health and safety at Work Act 1974.
The Team Managers work for a proportion of their duty hours without managerial support on campus. As the community safety team are required to support all stakeholders and individuals, the variety of areas where management of the community safety team has impact on the University community are broad. These include dealing with violent situations, responding to life-critical fire and security systems, fatalities, injuries, mental health issues, active crimes, victims of crime, and working closely with the Residential Life Team.
Shifts - 7am to 7pm and 7pm to 7am (4 on, 4 off).
