STUDENT SUPPORT & WELLBEING ADVISER
Job Description
Responsible to: Student Support and Wellbeing Manager
Purpose of role:
Working alongside the Student Support and Wellbeing Manager, the Adviser will be a first point of contact for students with wellbeing concerns and will provide advice and support for students across issues including disabilities, housing, financial and personal, as well as providing general wellbeing advice. The post holder may be required to liaise with various external agencies, professionals and staff across the School to provide a confidential support and advisory service for a range of welfare issues within a proactive and central context.
Core duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
· To provide confidential advice and guidance to students on a range of topics including: health and wellbeing, money management, accommodation and other welfare issues.
· Provide support to students with disabilities and ensure recommended reasonable adjustments are implemented.
· Help students complete Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) applications and liaise with DSA staff regarding any queries.
· Complete Reasonable Adjustment Plans for students with disabilities and liaise with departments over their implementation
· Advise and support students in accordance with School policies and procedures
· Develop and deliver proactive wellbeing initiatives, including working in partnership with the Students’ Union.
· Organise and prioritise your caseload, taking into account your students’ needs, and any urgent action required.
· Discuss the management of complex cases with the Student Support and Wellbeing Manager.
· Liaise with students and staff to ensure appropriate support is provided during students’ leave of absence and suspension, and on their return to studies.
· To make appropriate and timely referrals to other School support services, or external services / agencies.
· To respond to students in distress, and liaise with other staff across the School in implementing the School’s intervention procedures for students who present a risk to themselves or others.
· Provide office cover, and make appointments for other team members.
· Undertake training and continuing professional development in order to keep up to date with current legislation and good practice.
· To keep thorough, accurate and up to date client case notes to ensure compliance with professional standards and GDPR regulations.
· To forge and maintain excellent working relationships with colleagues across the School to ensure effective negotiation on behalf of individual students where appropriate.
· Contribute to the delivery of training to colleagues on matters relating to disability and student wellbeing.
· To understand the School’s obligations and responsibilities under the Equality Act and to act in accordance with the Act when a client discloses a disability.
· Contribute to the organisation of school wide events, such as Wellbeing Week, and to post information and news on Workplace.
Person Specification:
Skills/experience required:
Experience of working with students with a range of emotional and mental health difficulties in a confidential advisory setting
Experience of working with people from a diverse range of cultural and socio-economic groups
Understanding of data protection and privacy law
Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, and a strong team player
Able to demonstrate using diplomacy and tact when working with others
Ability to understand and maintain boundaries and professional ethics within a confidential setting
Evidence of using initiative and problem-solving skills
Meticulous administrative and record-keeping skills
Excellent knowledge of Microsoft office and confident in the use of databases including Excel
Self-motivational skills and the ability to work as part of a wider team
Educated to degree level or equivalent, or with equivalent skills and experience at an appropriate level
Desirable:
Knowledge of working within the Higher Education context
Experience of supporting students with disabilities
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: £25,000.00-£30,000.00 per year
