Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Highways Maintenance Operative to join our Highways business unit to work in Leeds.
Role Purpose:
Required to work on the M1A1 DBFO Maintenance contract completing reactive, emergency and winter service operational activities; utilising knowledge and experience to ensure that all works are completed to the required Health, Safety and Quality standards;
Responsible for carrying out all aspects of Highways Maintenance works including routine and cyclical maintenance, minor civils, emergency attendance, making sites safe and temporary / permanent repairs.
What you'll be doing
As a Highways Maintenance Operative you will be undertaking a work experience based training programme in Highway Maintenance; You’ll be following a 70:20:10 method of training:
70% on the job training
20% mentoring / coaching
10% formal training & qualifications
Over the period of 2 years you’ll learn all the aspects of how to work safely whilst maintaining the M1, A1(M) , M621 and M621 for the travelling public, providing a key service to the Leeds area.
What you’ll be learning:
Compliance:
Work within a culture of Zero Harm embedding the 4 Golden Rules within all aspects of service delivery;
Reporting all observations Close Calls and Good Practices;
Compliance with all statutory and company procedures across all the functions, specifically H&S;
Develop and maintain good working relationships across all teams.
Technical / Operations:
How to carry out a broad range of Highway maintenance activities - safety, efficiently and to a high standard;
How to conduct operational activities against required quality standards;
Undertaking required work progress against agreed programmes;
Selecting and undertake appropriate work methods to ensure the work is completed right first time;
Ensure that work activities meet project work requirements;
Utilising the effective deployment and use of plant, equipment or machinery;
Organising, control and monitor supplies of materials;
Evaluating job information / solution and recommend improvements.
Service Delivery:
Carry out all reasonable work instructions via the handheld device;
Support the emergency service provision in and out of hours;
Support the delivery of winter maintenance service;
Contribute to the overall profitability of the services providing through effective use of resources.
Customer Service:
Provide customer service in construction;
Be an ambassador for Balfour Beatty at all times.

You’ll be someone who’s interested in staying local to Leeds, working with a close knit team with secured work for the next 3 years with opportunities beyond, interest in learning about how highway maintenance and construction is delivered. Wants to learn new skills and develop themselves.

The following Qualifications are Essential
- Driving licence

- LGV (Class 1 or 2 Licence)
- CSCS; (Labourer, skilled trade or traffic management)
- Traffic management qualifications
- NRSWA;
- First Aid;
- Abrasive Wheel;
- Manual Handling;
- Banksman;
- NVQ Winter Service;
- Telehandler (Forks and/or Bucket)
- MEWP Driver
