The Specialist Perinatal Service sits within our Specialist Adult Mental Health Leadership Team and provides services across the catchment area of CWP. Our service has been developed via partnership working with Mersey Care NHS Trust to deliver a health and social care Partnership specialist community perinatal mental health service across the footprint of the Cheshire and Mersey health and social care partnership.

The Cheshire and Mersey Specialist Perinatal Service provides a multidisciplinary specialist community service for the assessment and treatment of women with moderate to severe mental illnesses in pregnancy and postnatally across the footprint of the Cheshire and Mersey STP. In addition to direct clinical care the service provides consultation, supervision, and support to a range of other services which treat women who may be experiencing perinatal mental health problems.

The service will also provide supervision and support to specialist Perinatal Mental Health Midwives and Health Visitors, Tiers 1 and 2 Perinatal Mental Health Services in the area, and other psychological therapy services working with women in the perinatal period.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will be directly involved with the assessment, diagnoses and management of pregnant and post-natal women referred with severe, complex difficulties or prominent risk issues. They will provide consultation and joint working for pregnant or post-natal women open to other mental health teams
  • Utilise a flexible approach to delivery of clinical care so that it best meets the needs of mother and infant at any given time.
  • Support colleagues in other specialist mental health services and within primary care – particularly GPs, midwives, health visitors, IAPT and social care services -to facilitate all women receiving evidenced based, good quality mental health care during the perinatal period.
  • Contribute to the education and training of staff from a variety of disciplines that meet women during the perinatal period.
  • Contribute to the development of the service and be actively involved in the critical evaluation of its effectiveness over time.
  • Be readily available during the working week so that medical and nursing staff can communicate and consult freely.
  • Ensure that management plans are clearly displayed in the medical records and undertake administrative duties associated with the care of the patient.
  • Foster relationships between staff within each organisation, and also with the local Clinical Commissioning Groups.
  • To act as an Approved Clinician for the purposes of the Mental Health Act 1983 and carry out duties in accordance with the code of practice.

New entrants to the NHS will commence on the minimum of the scale stated above.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team and in community settings
Desirable criteria
  • Experience managing women with severe and complex mental illness in the perinatal period
  • Involvement in service development

Registration

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council
  • Section 12 (2) Approval or demonstrated ability to gain approval
Desirable criteria
  • Approved Clinician Status

QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING

Essential criteria
  • MBChB, MBBS or equivalent
  • Minimum 4 years experience in post graduate training, at least two in a specialty training programme in general adult acute psychiatry including inpatient and community work or equivalent experience and competencies.
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent
