Job description
The post is for a Speciality Doctor in Dermatology. He /She will be responsible for the delivery and development of high quality Dermatology care in their area of expertise. The post holder will also be expected to participate in the normal duties relating to the administration of the Dermatology Department. These duties will include teaching, continuing medical education and audit/clinical governance.
The job is open to part time applicants and the job plan will be designed to utilise their expertise and developmental needs. This will include medical dermatology clinic consultations, 2 week wait suspected cancer polyclinics and minor surgery for skin cancer lesions.
Plymouth has one of the highest incidences of skin cancer in the United Kingdom and the diagnosis and management of skin cancer makes up a significant part of the workload of the dermatology department. We are supported by a large plastic surgery department but believe that dermatology should be at the forefront of skin cancer therapy, both non-surgical and surgical including Moh’s micrographic surgery. There is considerable potential for expanding the dermatology service to deal with demand.
Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust has committed to modernising the dermatology department which has recently relocated to a spacious self-contained unit adjacent to the hospital site. The new department offers good office accommodation, large areas for nurse-led treatments and phototherapy, a staff/seminar room, and consulting rooms. Clinics are also held at various peripheral hospitals. The dermatology theatres are located on the floor above and staffed by fully trained theatre scrub nurses.
The job plan will be 80% direct clinical care and 20% supporting professional activities. Administration time is allocated in the direct care sessions. There is no on call commitment or scheduled out of hours working. The services to be provided include general dermatology clinics, 2 week wait suspected skin cancer poly clinics and minor surgery.
