An exciting opportunity for an experienced Biomedical Scientist in Histology has now arisen in the UKAS accredited Advanced Diagnostics Laboratory based within Tissue Sciences at King’s College Hospital.
Applications are invited from an experienced HCPC registered Specialist
Biomedical Scientist who possesses an extensive level of histology practical
experience in immunocytochemistry. Molecular experience is desirable but not essential.
This post will be permanently based in the Advanced Diagnostics Section of the Tissue Sciences laboratory.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to further extend their
molecular pathology technique by being involved in Next Generation
Sequencing. Experience using the Ventana Benchmark Ultra and Leica Bond III platforms is desirable for the candidate as well as experience in molecular pathology technique in histopathology.

They will perform and/or monitor procedures ensuring that they are performed to accredited standards while supervising trainee BMSs and MLAs
They will liaise with pathologists, clinicians and laboratory staff to ensure
delivery of a professional and efficient diagnostic service.
Other duties include participating in external quality assessments, new test
development, research studies, stock procurement, quality management and health and safety audits.

Duties and Responsibilities
Organisational
- To work under the operational management of the Operations Manager in the Advanced Diagnostics Laboratory participating in the daily workload
- To comply with standard operating procedures at all times
- To comply with requests consistent with the grade as required by more senior members of the department
- To suggest and help implement changes to work practices / procedures
- To be actively involved in maintaining quality standards within the laboratory and participate in internal and external quality assurance programmes as directed by the Operations Manager
- To actively participate in the provision of a quality analytical service including a range of specialist histological tests
- To maintain professional competency and dexterity in specialist tasks and maintain levels of concentration required in the delivery of a quality service
- To participate in the daily workload of the Advanced Diagnostics Laboratory, including immunocytochemistry and molecular pathology
- To participate in research/ clinical trials
- To assess and select appropriate tests for a variety of conditions in consultation with medical staff
- To comply with local and national policies for the safe, secure and confidential processing, and storage of patient and other laboratory information
- To use the Laboratory Information System according to the authorised protocols
- To maintain the integrity and accuracy of laboratory databases
- To ensure that resources are used as economically as possible whilst achieving objectives
- To assist in monitoring laboratory consumable stock levels
- To assist in the evaluation of capital items of equipment and new laboratory consumables
- To maintain an up to date knowledge and awareness of technical developments
- To attend training courses as required
- To participate in an accredited CPD scheme and support the development of ‘in house’ scheme
- To actively participate in the in-service training programme
- To attend departmental meetings as required
- To participate in the Viapath staff performance, planning and review process
- To report to a senior staff member if laboratory equipment within the unit is not operational
- To ensure that laboratory tasks are undertaken in a clean and safe working environment
- To assist in periodic safety audits
- To comply with and implement the Departmental Safety Codes of Practice and ensure that staff and visitors are aware of and comply with them
- To assist in the monitoring of exposure to hazardous environmental and chemical substances and ensure safe working practices that limit the daily exposure to biological hazards
- To report accidents and adverse incidents to a senior staff member
- To ensure a close liaison with the Senior BMS’s, notifying them of any issues that may affect service delivery
- To liaise helpfully, competently and confidentially with technical and clinical colleagues and departmental visitors
- To communicate information to colleagues regarding the appropriate use of tests under supervision
- Provide approved departmental information and advice to other healthcare professionals, patients and the public and to refer on to appropriate specialists requests for information out with their area of responsibility.
