Contract Type: Temporary

Contract Length: 18 months

Hours per week: 21

Salary: £36,963 (FTE)

When a child is diagnosed with cancer life becomes full of fear, for them and their family. Fear of treatment, but also of families being torn apart, overwhelming money worries, of having nowhere to turn, no one to talk to.


At Young Lives vs Cancer, we help children and young people (0-25) and their families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. Join us and your skills will make a real difference to the lives of young cancer patients.


About the role


This role is for a qualified Social Worker, to work 21 hours per week and falls under the hybrid-variable category. This will include blended home based and office-based working at the Proton Beam centre based at Christie Hospital to provide support to children and young people (0-25 years) diagnosed with cancer and leukaemia and their families receiving proton beam treatment. You will have the opportunity to work remotely / from home within the parameters of our hybrid working arrangements, you will be expected to be office based for some of the week, but this will be dependent on the needs of the patients and families you are working with. You may occasionally be required to work evenings but this will be prearranged.


Interviews will be held face to face in Manchester on 31st August 2023.


This role is subject to a Criminal Record Check. In the event of a successful application a Disclosure report will be sought.

As well as current Social Work England registration you will have:


  • A recognised Social Work qualification
  • Experience working with children, young people and their families/carers in a social care setting.
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Knowledge of child and young people development.
  • An understanding of the impact of serious illness for children, young people and families.
  • All applicants should have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • It is desirable that you have experience working in an NHS setting.
  • Our work is rewarding but also complex and demanding; you will need to be resourceful and resilient. You will work closely with our supportive Young Lives vs Cancer team, an established NHS multi-disciplinary team and with services in the community.
