Why this role is important for CPI’s work

CPI is looking to recruit a Senior Scientist in Analytical Chemistry to join our growing team at the state-of-the-art Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre (MMIC). Located in Renfrewshire, the MMIC is a collaboration between CPI, the University of Strathclyde, UK Research & Innovation, Scottish Enterprise and founding industry partners, AstraZeneca and GSK.

This role provides the opportunity to work in new, exciting field of oligonucleotide manufacture and developing the solutions for today’s and the future’s health challenges in the new state-of-the-art MMIC facility which has a collaborative, innovative culture. This area is rapidly growing as recent advances have led to identification of many new drug targets and the therapies move from rare disease indications to mass market drugs.

You will be working with major pharmaceutical companies as customers and with equipment vendors and innovation companies, bringing these inputs all together as demonstration of manufacturing innovation. This role is for a mass spectrometry specialist with experience of working in a GMP manufacturing environment.

Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre set to Transform UK Pharma

Key tasks in the Senior Analytical Chemist role will include (but are not limited) to the below:

  • To maintain consistent and document compliance with all relevant Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Data Integrity (DI), quality and best practice requirements.
  • To perform analytical characterization and data analysis in a timely manner and to a high standard, interpret and report the results.
  • To be a subject matter expert in mass spectrometry, providing coaching and support to other team members.
  • Procurement, qualification, calibration, routine maintenance and monitoring of analytical equipment.
  • To identify new technical developments and trends, work with others to translate these into building blocks for opportunities within the business unit, initiating the creation of (new) technological innovations/applications.
  • Author, review and approval of SOPs, methods and specifications.
  • Plan and perform method development and method validation activities, drawing on expertise from our partners and across the CPI network.
  • Plan and Perform equipment qualification and software validation activities.

The person we are seeking

To be successful, you need to:

  • Be educated to degree level in a relevant field with industrial experience or HNC level with significant industrial experience in the techniques mentioned.
  • Have significant experience with LC-MS and its use in pharmaceutical process development and manufacturing. Ability to use a CDS for LC-MS and skilled in data analysis in LC-MS. Experience in the routine maintenance and troubleshooting of LC-MS systems.
  • Have the ability to train and coach other analytical scientists in the use of LC-MS.
  • Possess experience of operating within a GMP environment.
  • Have significant experience working with analytical techniques including spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques in a pharmaceutical development or production environment.
  • Have strong attention to detail with a thorough approach and good organisational skills.
  • Have the ability to work in fast paced environment, flexibility to adjust with moving priorities and ensuring attention to detail remains first class.
  • Demonstrate evidence of engagement in knowledge sharing and networking across teams and organisations to achieve desired results.
  • Be able to take responsibility for diverse or complex technical activities where it is necessary to use own initiative and judgement, implementing innovative solutions in complex situations.

It would be great if you also had:

  • Experience in analytical method technical transfer and method ruggedness improvement activities.
  • Experience in the analysis of oligonucleotides or similar macromolecules using LC-MS and related techniques.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 Quality Management System Standards.
  • Knowledge of EU GMP Guidelines Annexes 11 & 13.
  • Knowledge of GQCLP requirements.
  • Experience in the use of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Experience in Cleaning Validation, Method Development and Validation.
  • Knowledge and experience of Data Integrity principles.
  • Membership with a relevant professional or industry body, engaging with peers beyond CPI.
