Job description

As a Senior Interaction Designer, you’ll:

  • Demonstrate best practice in user centred design, for digital and non-digital interactions.
  • Work effectively across multidisciplinary teams, adapting quickly to change.
  • Champion accessibility and inclusion, considering the impact of new technologies.
  • Collaborate with designers in other teams, give constructive feedback on other’s work and contribute to developing design patterns.
  • Use research and analytics to understand user needs and identify opportunities.
  • Create prototypes using appropriate tools and methodologies, advising others on prototyping best practice.
  • Lead and coordinate design work, supporting other designers where necessary.
  • Actively support the design community in DWP and across government.

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working, including whether a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for you, will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.

Salary Information

Salary for this role is from £50,155 (Band min) to £60,781 (Band max).

Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.

Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary.

Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the next grade pay scale or 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater.

Selection process details

Stage 1: Application

Your application will consist of three parts:

1. A Personal Details application form.

2. Your employment history detailing your responsibilities, skills, accomplishments, plus your qualifications and relevant training. Please copy this information into the box field provided.

3. Personal statement up to 750 words.

When giving details in your employment history and personal statement you should highlight your experience in line with essential criteria below:

  • User focus- Work with User Researchers to plan and develop research activities that help teams to better understand users
  • Evidence and context-based design- Lead the design of solutions that are based on evidence and help identify any gaps in knowledge.
  • Prototyping- Use a variety of prototyping tools and methodologies, advising others on prototyping best practice.
  • Communication- Present your work and explain ideas in a way that people understand. Actively listen to other people’s input and facilitate discussions.
  • Accessibility- Promote the importance of inclusive design and how to design with accessibility in mind. You need to be familiar with the WCAG 2.1 guidelines and able to design to meet AA standards.
  • Collaboration- Work in the open, engaging others in the design process. Offer advice on improving working practices, leading to better collaboration across teams. Lead community activities across workstreams and departmental areas.

Stage 2: Interview

If you’re successful at sift stage, you will be invited to a video interview via Microsoft Teams. There, you will be assessed against the experiences listed in the essential criteria.

As part of your interview, you’ll be given 10 minutes to present one piece of work. We’d like you to give a little background, but you should focus on showing the work itself. We’re really interested in your approach to the problem you were given and the outcome. You should provide a PDF of your presentation 24 hours prior to interview.

Interviews will take place from late-March 2023.

A reserve list may be held for a period of 6 months from which further appointments can be made.
