Job description

These posts are 12 month post for Paediatricians in training wanting to broaden their experience and develop advanced skills in either Education and teaching or in Quality Improvement.

Dedicated time every week will be spent developing a significant Quality improvement project OR designing, developing and delivering clinical teaching to undergraduates and post graduates working within Paediatrics or within Primary care. This may also include other disciplines such as Nursing, ANPs and Physicians Associates.

There will be 2-3 days per week of clinical commitments to Acute Paediatrics at New Cross Hospital. This will be at Tier 2 level-ie Paediatric Registrar (level ST4+) This will include Children’s ward, Paediatric Assessment unit, evening and night duties. This will be limited to ensure that there is sufficient and protected time for either QI or education projects.

The fellows will be supported in the pursuit of a higher degree in Medical Education. Specific details will depend on the candidate. For example—post graduate certificate in Medical education

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust was established in 1994 and is a major acute Trust providing a comprehensive range of services for the people of Wolverhampton, the wider Black Country, Staffordshire, North Worcestershire and Shropshire. It gained Cancer Centre status in 1997, was designated as the 4thRegional Heart & Lung Centre during 2004/05 and became one of the first wave Bowel Screening Centres in 2006. The Trust is the largest teaching hospital in the Black Country providing teaching and training to around 130 medical students on rotation from the University of Birmingham Medical School. It also provides training for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals through well-established links with the University of Wolverhampton. One of the largest acute and community providers in the West Midlands the Trust has an operating budget of almost £380 million, more than 800 beds on 3 sites and employs around 8,000 staff.

The Trust serves the catchment area of Wolverhampton with a core population in excess of 245,000 for its community services, 336,000 for its secondary care services and around one million for its tertiary services. The Trust has grown its specialist service portfolio and its income significantly over the last few years as part of a business strategy to increase tertiary services both directly and as a driver to secure secondary service referrals from Clinical Commissioning Groups on our geographical boundaries.

  • To contribute to the high quality care delivered to children and young people, in both inpatient and out patient setting

  • To collaborate with colleagues in all disciplines (including primary and tertiary care where appropriate) to achieve an integrated service for patients.

  • To develop skills and interests appropriate for the sub-specialty general paediatric servic

  • To develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues within the department and in linked adult specialties and participate, where appropriate, in clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities

  • To have or develop a special interest to supplement the skills of the current medical team

  • To actively participate in the appraisal process for junior doctors, with consultant supervision

  • To take part in the teaching / education programme for junior doctors and medical students and participate in teaching activities in the region

  • To develop and maintain good communications with local General Practitioners, tertiary specialist colleagues and appropriate outside agencies

  • To show involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit within the department

  • To ensure own practice is up-to-date.

  • To maintain professional standards and obligations as set out by the General Medical Council.
