We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Band 7 Biomedical Scientist to join the friendly team in the Cellular Pathology department at Broomfield Hospital.
Cellular Pathology at Broomfield Hospital is a busy department that incorporates Histology and Non-gynae sample preparations. The department handles approximately 30,000 specimens p.a. (including non-gynae cytology) and specialises in Breast, urology, skin and upper GI.
The laboratory has full UKAS accreditation and is licensed by HTA.
You will be required to participate in all areas of the department, on a rotational basis. The post-holder will be required to obtain and maintain competency in all relevant aspects of the laboratory.
You will be required to assist the training of junior staff in microtomy and to organise a robust and fluid work flow to aid TAT and Trust directives
To work as part of a team to provide a high quality, cost effective and timely Histology service, as required by the Trust and its users.

- To manage a smooth, effective workflow through the department to facilitate departmental and Trust guidelines with respect to TATs
- To process histology specimens in accordance with agreed policies and standard operating procedures.
- To participate in all aspects of the histology department, using technical expertise to a high standard throughout all investigations and meeting deadlines as required for subsequent patient care
- To ensure and improve the workflow through the department
- Work as part of a team to ensure the efficient running of the department and undertake duties as required by senior staff.
- To assist in the training of trainee BMS staff, Associate Practitioners and Medical Laboratory Assistants and contribute to their development.
- To ensure that the demands of the department are managed to facilitate a high quality of work with an efficient workflow

- Registered with Health Professions Council and comply with code of practice of IBMSand HPC.
- Undertake all aspects of tissue preparation work in the department, including specimen reception and cut up, meeting quality standards.
- Assist in small specimen cut up by selecting tissues for further processing by following departmental procedures.
- Participate in the departmental work rota, including immunocytochemistry, staining, section cutting and embedding.
- Preparation of non-gynae samples, including appropriate staining techniques.
- Involved in booking in test details and patient details on to laboratory computer system.
- To monitor and maintain laboratory equipment.• To actively contribute to the training of trainee BMS staff, Associate Practitioners and Medical Laboratory Assistants and contribute to their development.
- To maintain and develop knowledge, skills and competencies in accordance with the Health Professions Council and as identified through the appraisal system and personal development plan.
- To sustain competencies in the use of all equipment appropriate to the task involved.
- To be flexible and provide cover for colleagues at all levels within capabilities and training.
- Participation in Continuous Professional Development programme in order to maintain professional competence.
- To attend all mandatory training.
- To be aware of developments within Histopathology, Pathology and Trust Strategy and relevant NHS directives.
- To be aware of safety issues within the department and follow safe working practice according to the departmental protocols.
- To be responsible for your own safety and that of your colleagues' by behaving in a professional manner and employing prompt appropriate action in the event of an incident occurring.
- To comply to risk assessments for each work area and adhere to COSHH assessments.
- Report all accidents, incidents or near misses and any dangerous situations to senior staff according to the Trust's risk events procedure.
- To ensure a safe environment by maintaining adequate levels of safety and security within the laboratory and reporting any shortfalls to management
