Job description
Applications are invited for the post of Safety Camera Officer , within the HQ Operations Division, HQ Operations Safer Roads Unit Camera Team based at Hutton Headquarters. This vacancy is for one permanent and one temporary position for 12 months.
The successful applicant will work alongside the SRU Safety Camera team who administer their camera detections.
Each day will start with a check to ensure there is no urgent correspondence requiring attention before beginning enforcement which has been planned using data which indicates where you will likely be the most effective. Each site is held on your force issued tablet with comprehensive site lists and navigation software because after you are trained and signed off as competent, although it’s likely you will cover a specific area other sites may need to be visited in other parts of the county when demand and colleague extractions dictate.
You will check your van for cleanliness and road worthiness, bearing in mind that your vehicle reflects the highest standards of Lancashire Constabulary. You will then check your camera equipment ensuring it is operating within set parameters and conduct a confidence check.
You will drive to the first site of the day and prior to enforcement will ensure that all the speed limit signage and gateway/terminal signage are in order. Any signs that are incorrect or missing or foliage that is obscuring the motorist’s view will be recorded and reported to the relevant local authority for rectification and enforcement cannot take place until that has been resolved. When satisfied that signage is correct you will set up your camera and conduct alignment checks before commencing enforcement.
For the period of enforcement you are to use your laser equipment to detect vehicles that are driving in excess of the speed limit you are also to be alert to secondary offences where drivers are committing other offences such as mobile phone, driver seat belts or other moving traffic offences. Following your period of enforcement you will then complete a site list noting the number of detection for speed and secondary offences. You will check alignment again prior to leaving the site and that all the gateways are still present and correct. Using your tablet, you will endorse your spreadsheet to note that you have visited the site on that date.
When you have concluded your enforcement activity, you will return to your briefing base.
You will be required to submit statements for cases being prosecuted in the Magistrates’ Court and give oral evidence for any matters proceeding to trial in a clear and professional manner.
You will on occasion be subject to obstruction/verbal abuse from members of the public and you will be expected to always remain calm and professional. You should inform the Force Control Room and supervision who will consider further action and colleagues from HQ Operations will often be available to attend should you need their support.
Training will be provided for successful Officers to ensure they are adequately prepared to perform this challenging but vitally important role.
