Overview
The National Theatre (NT) is one of the UK's leading arts venues, reaching millions of people each year through live and digital programming, and the creation and sharing of performances in London, across the UK and internationally. The organisation strives to be accessible, inclusive and sustainable. It empowers artists and craftspeople to make world-leading work, inspires young people, and works with communities. Based in the heart of London on its bustling South Bank, the venue is home to multiple performance spaces and is attended by over a million people annually, operating year-round to provide a welcoming space for audiences and visitors alike.
NT Food and Drink enhances the experience of visitors to the NT through delivery of hospitality across the building. With a range of venues from Espresso bars, cafes, theatre bars or pubs and food courts, many accessible to everyone, whether theatre-going or not. NT Food and Drink is operated by a partnership between Levy and Kerb, seeking to bring opportunity and joy to all through provision of great food from the kerb up, drinks and customer service. The Understudy sits in a prime location on the north-east corner of the National Theatre, overlooking the Thames, and boasting an afternoon sun-soaked terrace to boot. This relatively young member of the NT’s food and drink offering provides local craft beer & spirits, cocktails and street food seven days a week, with welcoming personality to boot. Its generous outdoor space allows it to be operational both inside and out, with events running throughout the year. 2023’s Summer Activation promises to be one long party, that everyone will want a ticket to. Don’t be deceived by the name – The Understudy will always give a memorable performance.
YOU
Our customer-facing staff set the tone for every visitor; you are warm and engaging, with a desire to welcome people and relax them with your cheerful patter. Talking of people, you like being around them, working with them, and leading them – helping to nurture, educate and improve. You might still have learning to do yourself, but you’re ready to impart your knowledge and learn on the job. You know your way around a pub – we’re not just talking the bar, but backstage too - the cellar, the kitchen and everything else in between. You’re bringing experience, and the capacity to support the leadership of our team, but you’re humble enough to remember your beginnings; that no job is too small for anyone, and teamwork means putting the team first. This isn’t just knowing your part; it’s being ready to step up when the team needs you!
THE ROLE
The Assistant Bar Manager is responsible for running The Understudy and its associated areas. You will support the General Manager in all operational, strategic, and back of house duties, including playing an active role in the management and mentoring of a team of Supervisors and Team Leaders who manage the day-to-day operations of the business. You’ll be responsible for overseeing operations, and the first point of contact for wider stakeholders within the NT. Internal You will manage and support Supervisors and Team Leaders to provide a highly visible leadership Front of House, greeting and engaging with customers when required. You will lead, supervise, motivate and support to coordinate team members, ensuring delivery of a world class customer service experience to all patrons of The Understudy and the NT. You will be meticulous in setup of the venue, having adequate stock for service, knowing which members of the you’re working with and ensuring workspaces are kept clean and presentable. You will take an active role in the induction, training, and development of staff. You are a member of the management team, so back of house, you work with the GM to ensure standards are in place in terms of people training and development, stock control and management, and that deep cleaning occurs in line with schedules, including cleaning of lines, storage facilities and the cellar. You will meet regularly with the “KERB at The Understudy” team of traders who provide the venue’s food offerings and take an active lead on the relationship between them and your team, to ensure staff are aware of their offerings and menu changes. You will attend management meetings as required and play an active role in the development of The Understudy, through product suggestion, ideas for events to drive sales and the continued growth of this unique business
