Job description
The SNP Westminster Group wishes to recruit a full time Researcher (Foreign Affairs, Defence and International Trade).
Reporting to the Senior Researcher, the Researcher will support the work of the SNP’s team of MPs in Westminster.
Location: The SNP Westminster Group operates a system of hybrid working. Staff are required to work from our offices in the House of Commons, Westminster, London some of the time, as part of a rota system, and can choose to work remotely, or from the office, the rest of the time.
Salary: Salary band A/1 (from £30,553). The SNP Westminster Group offers a 10% employer pension contribution and 30 days annual leave, plus bank holidays.
Description: Based in Westminster the Researcher will be operating in a fast-paced environment at the heart of SNP Westminster Group. The successful candidate will play an important role in maintaining the smooth running of the work of the third largest party in the House of Commons.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent organisational, administrative and communications skills. The organisational capacity to process large volumes of information and requests quickly and accurately is essential.
Political awareness and judgement and knowledge of the SNP’s aims and objectives would be strongly advantageous.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Draft research proposals and commission research projects
- Provide written analysis for major set pieces related to this policy area
- Undertake research using qualitative / quantitative and mixed methodologies related to the policy area/s.
- Support the relevant spokespeople and MPs to scrutinise legislation and draft amendments, as well as support MPs’ parliamentary committee work and provide briefings and questions for parliamentary debates
- Identify and research policy development opportunities to reflect the party’s manifesto and policy framework
- Produce robust policy and political analysis for use in both internal and external communication
- Identify and develop partnership opportunities with stakeholders such as think tanks, associations, the diplomatic community and other relevant organisations
- Assist MPs’ constituency offices with queries
- Generate content in collaboration with the Group’s Communications team as required
Reporting to Senior Researcher (Foreign Affairs, Defence & International Trade) and from time to time, the Head of Research, the incumbent will focus on dealing with complex issues and prominent topics related to the foreign affairs policy area, to support the SNP Westminster Group of MPs (currently 45).
The post holder should also demonstrate skills, abilities and experience as follows:
Person Specification
- Good communication skills
- Sound political and professional judgement
- Previous work experience in foreign affairs and related public policy preferred
- Ability to research various public policy practices
- Experience of dealing with public bodies or political organisations
- Good time management
- Ideally a degree in Political Science, International Affairs, Defence and/or other relevant studies
