Job description
The Petri Laboratory in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases and International Health at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine seeks applications for a postdoctoral Research Associate position. Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.
This position will involve working at both UVA and with our partners in low- and middle-income countries, principally with our well-established partners in Bangladesh. Our goal is to understand the immune correlates of protection against cryptosporidiosis and develop a protective vaccine. With this goal in mind, we have collaborations in areas of the world where this parasite is endemic. There is no vaccine to protect from cryptosporidiosis, a leading cause of diarrhea in infants in low and middle-income countries and in the immune-compromised.
Duties will include:
- Full-time research or scholarship at the University.
- Preparatory for a full-time academic or research career
- Supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship
- In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
The position is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.
Minimum requirements:
Education: Doctoral degree in Parasitology, Microbiology or Clinical Microbiology
In addition to scientific skills in molecular parasitology, the position will require a team player, capable of working with people from a diverse range of backgrounds.
This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance. The position will remain open until filled. This is an exempt-level, benefitted position. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. A pre-employment health screening is required.
