What you’ll be doing
Major Projects are responsible for delivering large complex single-site projects over £30m in value. Once a need has been validated, the Major Projects Team is responsible for the Definition, Outline Design, Execution, and Closedown Stages.
Each project will typically require 12-18 months to complete all activities up to the award of the main contract with the design and build contract subsequently being delivered over several years. During the pre-contract period, we will need to complete a study, consider the options and feasibility of the solution, develop the procurement strategy, and reference solution, and procure and award the main contract. Following the award, we will work collaboratively with the main contractor to ensure the works are effectively delivered.
As a Quantity Surveyor, you’ll be responsible for ensuring value for money for your projects, whilst working with the Project Manager and the rest of the team on all commercial aspects of the project, pre and/or post-contract.
You’ll be expected to split your time between our head office in central Reading, site, and home working.
Key areas of responsibility include:
- Working with the project team to produce tender documents and undertake the commercial evaluation of tenders
- Ensuring that appropriate processes are in place and monitored on your contracts to demonstrate contractual compliance is maintained and any non-performance of the contract is identified, with corrective actions implemented as necessary
- Review contractor applications and produce monthly valuations and arrange payments
- Approval of contractor's proposed subcontractors and suppliers
- Identifying, analysing, and developing responses to commercial risks
- Support the resolution of general disputes as necessary
- Risk management and cost control
- Undertaking cost analysis and producing detailed reports
- Support the production of monthly VOWD and cash flow forecasts
- Agree Final Account’s
- Review the contractor's cost data submissions for appropriateness for inclusion in Thames Waters Engineering Estimating System
- Ensure we always maintain financial governance, highlighting issues early, managing and reporting on contingency/risk updates
- Providing commercial advice and guidance to the team
- Supervising AQS working on your project
We’re looking for you to
- Minimum of 2 years’ Quantity Surveying experience.
- Have a degree in Quantity Surveying or equivalent
- Have the desire to work towards gaining Chartered status. Thames Water will support you through your RICS APC.
- Be enthusiastic and able to take ownership of tasks, ‘think on your feet, devise plans of action, and deliver effective solutions
- Be able to work semi-autonomously and be professional
- Be inquisitive and have meticulous attention to detail
- Be able to ‘hold your ground’ and offer reasoned advice in a fast-paced environment
- Have some commercial, contractual, and dispute-resolution experience and knowledge
- Although some infrastructure and/or water experience is preferable, it is not essential.
