Contract length: We require a minimum commitment of four months, preferably six
Location: Remote (or hybrid working in London)
Start date: ASAP
Deadline for application: 23:59 GMT on Sunday 5 March 2023
Do you have a knack for social media, events, marketing, and writing? Do you want to learn how a digital newsroom runs behind the scenes and work with experienced journalists across the world? Are you interested in global news and humanitarian issues like aid, development, and conflict? If so, we have the internship for you.
The New Humanitarian is looking for a smart and agile individual to join our small, passionate team, which works remotely around the world. Learn hands-on and work with experienced editors doing journalism that makes a difference. Interns are an integral part of our team and are given significant opportunities to grow (our current CEO and several senior leaders are former TNH interns!)
The Audience & Revenue intern works on community building, fundraising, marketing, and brand building. You could be helping produce an event or a podcast episode, writing copy for social media, managing our membership benefits, or developing syndication opportunities. We are a growing but still small team, aiming to expose interns to all aspects of a digital-first newsroom. We only ask that you be agile, full of initiative and willing to adapt to rapidly changing business needs. And we will make sure you have room to learn, space for creativity and flexibility around your class schedule or other commitments.
About The New Humanitarian
TNH is one of the world’s leading sources of original, field-based journalism about humanitarian crises. Our journalists report from 70 crisis zones around the globe on everything from conflict to natural disasters, from migration to pandemics. We are amplifying the voices of those most affected and informing more effective prevention of crises and better aid responses. It aims to hold the humanitarian sector accountable to itself, its funders, and the communities it serves.
After 19 years as part of the United Nations, TNH spun off in 2015 to become an independent non-profit media organisation, now headquartered in Switzerland. Our journalism has prompted public petitions, donations and charity telethons, new aid programmes, debates in local parliament and changes in UN policy. Find out more about us here.
The intern in this role will carry out a number of tasks, including supporting our Marketing Manager and Director of Audience and Revenue Development with the organisation of events and management of our membership programme.
They will also be responsible for:
- Creating, scheduling, and posting copy for social media, newsletters, and web
- Updating and engaging with our members in a private Slack channel and via email
- Helping with the planning and execution of membership drives and fundraising campaigns
- Managing public-facing inboxes and donations
- Identifying potential targets for publishing partnerships
- Collaborating with other members of the team
Furthermore, there is room to explore all aspects of the newsroom, take initiative, and pursue special projects.
Intern Profile
The ideal candidate for this internship will bring with them a knowledge of, and an unwavering passion for, journalism, global issues, and the humanitarian sector. You should have impeccable attention to detail and be comfortable working independently in a remote, decentralised team. You will have a willingness to adapt to changing business needs and hold a desire to learn what makes modern journalism succeed behind the scenes.
You will also possess the following:
- Strong knowledge of social media, newsletters, and common multimedia tools for newsrooms
- Knowledge of or the ability to quickly master audience and revenue management software such as MailChimp, Stripe, Suffer, CRMs
- Fluency in written and oral presentation skills in English
- Ability to work well with others, build relationships, and communicate with strangers
Fluency in another language (German preferred) and knowledge of a regional media scene outside the US and UK would be advantageous.
The successful candidate will join an organisation with a compelling mission; a strong reputation – built over more than 25 years – for journalistic integrity and credibility; a team who deeply cares about its work; and a commitment to becoming a transformative newsroom that practises decolonised journalism, puts impact at the centre of its work, and adopts a progressive culture centred on well-being.
Current students in graduate journalism programmes (or adjacent fields) or recent graduates are encouraged to apply, and we especially welcome applications from those who reflect the diverse communities our journalism serves.
