Jigsaw School has rare opportunities for psychology graduates to support autistic pupils to reach their full potential by using behaviour-based teaching techniques.

Jigsaw School, an Ofsted graded ‘Outstanding’ school for autistic children aged 4-19, has teaching assistant vacancies available for psychology graduates who are looking to develop their careers in the field of education and gain hands on experience of supporting autistic children. At Jigsaw School, ‘everything we do is behaviour’ – You will be trained in strategies and interventions that encourage positive outcomes and development of our pupils. Working within small classes individually and in groups, you will design, plan and deliver teaching sessions to encourage pupils learning and progression as well as improve their social and emotional development. You will receive support and regular supervision from some of the UK’s leading and internationally recognised Behaviour Analytic experts.

Salary: £18,626 per annum, regular salary progression based on completion of training and a £1,000 joining bonus

Contract terms: 34.75 hours per week – Monday to Friday 9am to 4.30 pm (Tuesday to 5.30pm for staff meetings and training). Part Time working is also considered – 3 or 4 days (working days must include a Tuesday)

Holiday: 44 days, Term Time Only

What will I be doing at Jigsaw School?

  • Provide teaching and support to our pupils, following individualised curriculums
  • Plan, prepare and deliver lessons and activities, focusing largely on life skills
  • Support pupils’ participation in trips, applying theory-based learning to practice
  • Provide behaviourally based support to reduce behaviours that impact quality of life
  • Provide personal care, encouraging pupils to maintain acceptable levels of hygiene (toileting, feeding)
  • Monitor pupil progress, ensuring teaching is appropriate and effective for each child’s needs
  • Assist with breaktime duties including playground support and snack time
  • Contribute to research and undertake training to support your personal development

What training & qualification opportunities are there?

  • Regular training in Safeguarding, Emergency Medication, Behaviour Management, Personal Care, Autism, First Aid and more
  • Access to a wide range of Education & Childcare courses including RQF CACHE Level 2, 3 & 4 in Early Years, Learning Difficulties and Teaching & Learning
  • Behaviour specific qualifications including Teaching ranks (cabasschools.org), Registered Behaviour Technician (RBT) (bacb.com), Board Certified Behaviour Analysis certification (BCBA) and Masters in Behaviour Analysis
  • In situ teacher training and observations in the classroom

What do you need?

  • A psychology degree (or in final year pending completion)
  • Comfortable working with children with complex needs
  • Ability to keep calm in high pressure situations
  • Drivers licence or access to a lift (due to remote location)
