The Mount Holyoke College Physics Department invites applications for an open rank tenure-track position to begin fall 2024. We seek a candidate with a strong interest in undergraduate teaching in a liberal arts environment, and the capability to establish a vigorous, on-campus, externally-funded research program involving undergraduates.

To apply, please submit a cover letter addressing your interest in Mount Holyoke, a CV, a teaching statement, a research statement, and a mentorship statement; specific guidelines are detailed below. Ph.D. or ABD is required.

We value the cultivation of a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive environment in the classroom. The teaching statement will address the candidate’s sincere commitment to student success and effective teaching across all levels of the curriculum. The successful candidate will bring a reflective approach to their teaching and will be open to PER (Physics Education Research) informed practices.

Faculty in physics maintain active and thriving research programs, and we seek a candidate who will increase the breadth of research activities on campus. Startup funding, lab space, and technical support will be provided, and access to state-of-the-art facilities at nearby University of Massachusetts is possible. The research statement will address the candidate’s proposed scholarly work at Mount Holyoke. The statement should include i) a description of the candidate’s prior and current scholarly work, ii) proposed research for their first few years at Mount Holyoke, and iii) a description of how undergraduates could be involved. A description of facilities needs is useful for the committee to envision the described program but is not required at this time.

Given our department’s commitment to educating students historically excluded from practicing physics, we ask for a separate statement that addresses mentoring a diverse student population. We acknowledge there could some be overlap between this and the prior two statements; use this statement to elaborate upon or highlight particular approaches.

Mount Holyoke is an undergraduate liberal arts college with 2,200 students and 220 faculty. Over half the faculty are women; one-fourth are persons of color. Mount Holyoke College is located about 90 miles west of Boston in the Connecticut River valley, and is a member of the Five College Consortium consisting of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts.
