An active member of the Pre-Analytical team within the Specimen Reception area(s) of Blood Sciences, working with Biomedical Assistants, BMS staff, Medical staff, and Associate Practitioners in a flexible manner to support the function of the process.
It is assumed the person employed will have experience in training other staff and in a previous supervisory role, with knowledge of laboratory processes. The tasks undertaken by this role involve a higher level of complexity and a requirement for more knowledge, understanding and for using initiative to prioritise the work. This role is 24/7 and can include weekends and night working. The role may also include working at different sites.
A vacancy has arisen for the position of Pre-Analytical Supervisor in the busy Specimen Reception & Data Input areas of the combined Haematology and Biochemistry departments (Blood Sciences) within Pathology at University Hospitals of Leicester. The role will require the candidate to work at all three UHL sites of the LRI, GGH, and LGH.
This is not a Biomedical Scientist training post and therefore not a ideal position for trainee biomedical scientists.
Providing support for the smooth running of the laboratory, your duties will include:
- Receipt of Pathology samples prior to analysis which involves manual handling.
- Inputting of data from patient request forms onto the system.
- There is also an element of manual dexterity required in this role
- Training other team members in all duties of Specimen Reception
- The Pathology Laboratory is open 24/7 including nightshifts and weekend working and you will be contracted to work shifts within this period. You will be required to work on 24/7 contract including weekends and nights.
- The successful applicant will be educated to GCSE have an excellent manner and possess good keyboard skills with experience involving a keen attention to detail.

The list of duties as described by the Head of Department will include:
Operational Duties:
- Supervisory & Training: Participate in the training of new biomedical assistants and associate practitioners. Supervise biomedical assistants and less experienced staff, allocating work, training, etc.
- Test Knowledge: Demonstrates an understanding of the sample requirements for the tests performed within the Fast Track Laboratory as well as a basic understanding of sample requirements and procedures carried out in other laboratories within pathology.
- Sample Preparation and Analysis: Be involved in the preparation of samples prior to analysis and organise the day-to-day arrangements for sample storage and disposal. Assist in analyses on automated analysers according to standard operating procedures.
- Malfunctions: Identify malfunctions, errors or problems and deal with them according to procedures. Ability to identify basic errors and deal with them according to standard operating procedures using initiative where required.
- Organisation: Must maintain flexibility and may be required to cover BMA duties in different areas of the laboratory, at short notice. Works with the team leader and BMS’s to organise day to day staff allocation ensuring departmental procedures are followed and to ensure the smooth running of the department.
- Order entry: Book-in laboratory requests into the laboratory computer ensuring the appropriate laboratory tests and examinations are performed on the correct patient’s specimens and the resultant report is sent to the correct requesting source.
- Document Archiving: Be involved in the electronic archiving of laboratory documentation to meet accreditation requirements.
- Stock control: Assist in the day–to-day stocks of consumables.

- Perform other technical duties as required within post-holder’s training and competence. To perform any other duties required by the Laboratory Manager or Head of Department commensurate with grade. Training relevant to this post, including safety aspects in the handling of biological material, will be given.
