Job description
Purpose of the Job:
The role covers duties both on land and at sea, working as part of a small team on a survey /
patrol vessel as a member of the crew, undertaking boarding operations and shore-based
enforcement of fisheries legislation, as well as assisting with surveys and project work,
replying to consultations, liaising with partner organisations and stakeholders and attending
meetings. These duties would be carried out across the North West of England, with a focus on
the north Cumbria coast and associated inshore marine area.
Main Duties & Responsibilities:
Undertake the duties of an IFCO, in particular the enforcement of fisheries conservation
measures. This will involve sea-based and shore-based inspections.
Undertake the duties of crew on the Authority’s fisheries patrol / survey vessels and help
maintain the vessels in good working order.
Record fishing activity by location, numbers of fishers, vessels and types of fishing
activity and collect fisheries intelligence.
Take consistent risk-based enforcement action to prevent illegal fishing activity, collect
evidence when offences are detected and submit to the Head of Enforcement.
Assist with investigating fisheries offences.
Prepare quarterly reports for the Authority and other reports as required.
Assist with environmental monitoring both at sea and during intertidal surveys with our
Science Team.
Liaise with the fishing industry and other key stakeholders, regarding fisheries /
conservation management and associated issues and, where necessary, write reports regarding the
outcomes of consultations.
Represent the Authority at external meetings as and when required.Ensure that any vehicles, vessels, equipment are correctly maintained
Qualifications
GCSE - Grade 5 or above in English and Mathematics (or equivalent).Current Full UK Driving Licence.RYA Powerboat Level 2 Seamanship qualifications such as first aid, sea survival, VHF licence
etc. Degree in relevant subject or equivalent experience.
Experience

Skills & Personal Attributes
IT literate with good level of competence in operating MS Office. Methodical, flexible,
self-motivated and discrete.Physically fit - needs to pass Seaman’s medical (ENG1 or ML5).Flexible attitude to working routine as well as regular weekend and unsociable hours as
required. Written and oral communication at all levels.Advanced IT and project management skills.
