Paralegal Officers play an integral role in delivering justice. You will be responsible for undertaking case management duties within the paralegal team, whilst providing assistance to prosecutors as part of the overall prosecution team. As part of your role, you will be responsible for preparing and maintaining case progression both in Magistrates and Crown Court. You will have the ability to deal effectively and timeously, working both independently and in partnership with prosecutors, fellow paralegal staff, casework assistants and others within the local criminal justice system.

As a Paralegal Officer you are at the heart of what we do. Your day-to-day work will be varied as you face new experiences and are positively challenge; no two days will be the same. You will be able to gain vital skills, including organisation skills, communication skills and legal knowledge. The skills and knowledge which you will develop as a Paralegal Officer will allow you to go on to develop further professionally with access to a range of roles across the CPS and Civil Service.

Job description

The purpose of this role is to undertake case management duties within the paralegal team. You will also be expected to provide assistance to prosecutors as part of the overall prosecution team; through the preparation and progression of summary trial cases in the magistrates’ court.

This role will be involved in providing assistance through the preparation and ongoing maintenance of Crown Court casework from receipt of file pre committal/transfer, through attendance at Crown Court where necessary, to post court conclusion.

They will be expected to deal effectively and timeously with all case preparation, case progression and administrative tasks throughout the life cycle of a case, working both independently and in partnership with prosecutors, fellow paralegal staff, casework assistants and others within the local criminal justice system, to produce optimum outputs.

Person specification

To supervise and monitor workflows, plan and prioritise work and direct Paralegal Assistants to meet objectives and targets.

To read and research cases, providing advice and making recommendations to prosecutors upon receipt of papers following case allocation within the team.

In partnership with prosecutors the postholder will undertake summary trial case preparation and progression in respect of all cases in the Unit/Team (including cases in the PCPT).

Represent the CPS effectively to outside agencies and the public, providing care, information and support to victims and witnesses of crime. Represent the
unit at meetings, both internally and externally when required.

To prepare the Crown Court Case Preparation Package (CCCP1) on the Case Management System (CMS) at the pre and post committal/transfer stage, to include building indictments, consideration of the evidence and making recommendations to the reviewing lawyer as to the conduct of the case.

The postholder to be deployed at Court as required by the Paralegal Business Manager on a case-by-case basis, taking into consideration issues such as case complexity and sensitivity.

Before attendance at the Court sitting, familiarise themselves with the history of the case, the progress log and the issues that are likely to arise.

Merit List and Deployment of Offers

Candidates are invited to provide two office location preferences from the list provided. If you are successful, we will exclusively offer using your choices in the first instance.

If invited to interview; your interview panel will be determined using your first preference of location. We are using a locational (localised) merit list system of appointment and offers will be made based on the merit order of each CPS Area interviewed for e.g. Nottingham, Leicester, Northampton or Lincoln would be CPS East Midlands. This means the highest rated candidate will be appointed from the region in which the vacancy has arisen. This means that even if you have scored higher than the candidate being selected, you will not be selected as you are not within the region with the vacancy.

After these appointments have been fulfilled under the locational merit list process, the remaining candidates who have successfully passed their assessments will remain on a merit list for 12 months.

If a candidate is offered a position that they are unable to accept they can remain on the reserve list and may be offered a position for their location preference should one become available, however the reserve list will expire 12 months after the interviews take place and positions for candidates first preference cannot be guaranteed.
