Job description
Operative – Norfolk, aligned to either Diss or Kings Lynn Cpmoressor Station - £34,940 to £41,104
Are you someone who likes to go walking in rural and remote terrain? In preparation do you check the weather report and see that its overcast with rain and think, that doesn't bother me? If so, this role could be perfect for you.
As an Operative, you’ll protect and maintain the high-pressure systems in our compressor stations and look after the miles of pipelines and above ground installations we have that transport natural gas around the country. These stations are the engines that power long-distance gas pipelines across the National Transmission System.
Working with our Technicians and Engineers, you’ll make sure that the inspection requirements of pressure systems are delivered, including physically line walking pipelines (up to 200km/year) across rural and remote terrain. You’ll also monitor third-party work and keep people safe when they need to dig near our pipelines. You’ll provide aerial sighting response, site and marker post-maintenance, cathodic protection monitoring, and support the in-line inspection programme, all these activities help to protect our high pressure pipelines, valves and above ground installations. Experience of civil works/ excavations would be a great advantage here.
You’ll carry out roles within our permit to work system that you’re competent and authorised to undertake including Competent Person for low-risk activities and Working Party Member for more complex tasks. You’ll also support during planned and emergency situations.
You’ll have experience in maintenance, fault diagnosis and rectification work within Engineering and have operated, controlled and undertaken work within Safe Systems of Work and/or under Risk Assessment. We work in hazardous areas, so knowledge of health and safety is key.
In this role you will have the opportunity to be trained and developed to support with the cathodic protection monitoring programme. You’ll be covering different sites across the patch, so expect some travel. The patch for this role spans from Kings Lynn to Bacton and then down to the border of Suffolk,

About Us
We are National Gas, including National Gas Transmission and National Gas Metering.
In February 2023 we became a standalone business, to maintain and own the Gas Infrastructure in the UK. But more than that, to develop and grow this infrastructure to set us up for a cleaner energy future. A future of Hydrogen.
This means we are currently in a period of both opportunity and uncertainty. While nobody knows exactly what things will look like in a years’ time, those who join the business now will have a unique opportunity to shape the future of Gas Transmission in the UK.
Business separations take a long time, so you might still see some references to National Grid here and there. This is part of the process, and won’t make any difference to your application.
Inclusion is how we make people feel and it plays a crucial part of our journey. This is why we are committed to being an inclusive employer and encourage applications from all suitable candidates.
This isn’t just a tick box – you can find out more about what we’re doing here: https://jobs.nationalgrid.com/national_gas/content/Diversity-and-Inclusion/?locale=en_GB
The closing date is 17th September, although in some cases I’ll close the ad early, so don’t delay.
I’ll respond to every single application.
