Job description

  • To work as a member of the inter-professional team and assist the registered nurses and medical team in identifying patient fitness and suitability for elective surgery.
  • Support the development of pre-operative assessment triage clinic PACT.
  • To contribute to the efficient running of the clinics and a happy and supportive working environment for patients and staff.
  • To work closely with the receptionists.
Responsibilities

  • To ensure patient privacy, dignity and confidentiality at all times.
  • To perform observations such as height, weight and BMI calculations, peak flow, oxygen saturation levels, blood pressure readings and tests including urine analysis, phlebotomy and recording ECGs. Record results in the electronic patient record and report findings to the patients named nurse.
  • To remove and replace dressing as requested by registered staff and remove simple sutures
  • Work within department protocols to request Blood and MRSA Investigation
  • To ensure that all appropriate documentation and equipment is available for the outpatient clinics. To help ensure that all appropriate documentation and equipment is accounted for and returned to the appropriate area and/or department at the end of the clinic.
  • To assist registered nurse with late cover in OPD/POAC if clinics are running late.

Job Title: Nursing Assistant

Grade: Band 3

Responsible to: Sister, POAC / OPD

Accountable to: Operational Service Manager Orthopaedics

Overall Aims• To work without direct supervision, following appropriate training, supporting the nursing team, delivering a high standard of care for patients attending the departments

  • To work as a member of the inter-professional team and assist the registered nurses and medical team in identifying patient fitness and suitability for elective surgery.
  • Support the development of pre-operative assessment clinic
  • To contribute to the efficient running of the clinics and a happy and supportive working environment for patients and staff.
  • To work closely with the ward clerk and to deputise as necessary.
Key Result Areas
  • To ensure patient privacy, dignity and confidentiality at all times.
  • Following training and assessment, to carry out observations such as height, weight and BMI calculations, peak flow, oxygen saturation levels, blood pressure readings and tests including urine analysis, phlebotomy and recording ECGs. Record results in the electronic patient record and report findings to RGN.
  • To ensure that any previous casenotes, test results etc are available for the clinics and new documentation is prepared for each patient in POAC.
  • To ensure that all appropriate documentation and equipment is available for the outpatient clinics. To help ensure that all appropriate documentation and equipment is accounted for and returned to the appropriate area and/or department at the end of the clinic.
  • To assist registered nurse with late cover in OPD if clinics are running late.
  • Maintain accurate records both paper and IT.
  • To welcome patients and record their arrival in POAC.
  • To direct or escort patients to other departments in the hospital.
  • To liaise with transport providers to help ensure patients are collected from the clinic promptly.
  • To liaise closely with the nursing staff to ensure that clinics run effectively and efficiently. Report any problems to the co-ordinator.
  • Assist in the orientation of new staff to the clinical area..
  • Pull patient notes from medical records as required.
  • To deal with telephone and general enquires promptly and efficiently.
  • Assist in maintaining an effective communication network and a harmonious atmosphere within the unit.
  • To attend and contribute to team meetings.
  • To help keep patient and non-patient areas clean and tidy,including cleaning examination couches between patients and disposing of linen appropriately.
  • To help maintain adequate levels of clinical supplies, stationary and linen, placing orders for non-stock items as required.
  • To receive and put away stores.
  • Be aware of and abide by all Trust policies and guidelines.
  • Report all incidents/accidents to the Sister or co-ordinator and assist in the completion of accident/incident forms as appropriate.
  • To help record the waiting times in accordance with the Trust guidelines.
  • Attend mandatory training in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Set personal objectives in a yearly personal development review with the Sister or other designated person.
  • To work closely with the ward clerk and to deputise as necessary.
