We are looking to grow our Shipping and Logistics research in distinctive and innovative ways and welcome candidates from across - and between - all disciplines related to this area. Key to our ambition is a desire to actively help the maritime and related sectors in their quest to achieve net zero . If your expertise and passion lie in areas such as: analysing shipping and logistics systems; helping ports to become both greener and smarter; investigating pathways to net zero intermodal transport; exploiting the potential of shipping and logistics data; maximising the potential of intelligent and smart systems; enhancing maritime cyber security and resilience; then we’d love to hear from you.

Our NUAcT Fellowship in Shipping and Logistics will galvanise and build research momentum across the University around a number of different opportunity areas, embedding the Fellow into a supportive multidisciplinary environment, which includes our Newcastle University Centre of Research Excellence in Mobility and Transport and our Marine, Offshore and Subsea Technology Research Group . There will be opportunities too to develop links with researchers across the University in areas beyond shipping and logistics such as for example computing science, civil engineering, geography, energy systems and business.

Shipping and Logistics at Newcastle University
The School of Engineering (and its predecessors) have a long tradition ( >100 years) of teaching and researching in the broad areas of transport, shipping and marine technology. The School maintains strong connections with industry – for example with the Port of Tyne and both its 2050 Maritime Innovation Hub and Clean Energy Testbed, in addition we have an active and committed Industrial Advisory Board which we work closely with. We have a long and successful track record in completing both industrial and publicly funded research projects; for example we have been successful in receiving funding for a number of significant research projects on both smart ports and green shipping corridors under the UK Government’s Clean Maritime Demonstrator competitions. We have also played a key role in the EPSRC funded Network Plus on Decarbonising UK Freight Transport. We have been most fortunate to receive philanthropic funding from a number of generous benefactors to support our research with this Fellowship generously part-funded by the McGregor Endowment. We have a proud tradition of graduating PhD alumni who now work all over the world.

The latest stage in the evolution of our shipping and related research at Newcastle continues with the move of our group to the state-of the-art redeveloped Stephenson Building over the next 12 months which will provide a rich and vibrant environment for our colleagues to progress their research.

The research trajectory of the School of Engineering in the areas of Shipping and Logistics is focused broadly around three domains of increasing importance and value:
Finding solutions to today’s key sustainability challenges;
Understanding both design and risk aspects of shipping and logistics networks;
Maximising the benefits that data and digital technologies can bring.

The Fellowship will have a broad focus bridging technology, policy, regulation and applications addressing the challenges and opportunities that the decarbonisation and net zero agendas pose. These include areas related but not limited to:
Shipping network design
Intelligent and smart systems exploiting data potential
Safety, cyber security and resilience
Emerging technologies
Intermodality, ports and landside infrastructure.

We welcome interest from applicants across the broad breadth of maritime systems including shipping, ports and landside infrastructure, logistics systems, policy and regulation, and data and intelligence. Recent PhD (1-5) years with evidence of a strong research trajectory. Ideally some international experience / orientation. Capable of working with other disciplines to progress solutions to complex problems that require interdisciplinary solutions. Team player but with the intellectual independence to allow pursuing own initiative and take a lead on progressing research initiatives. The Fellow will also have a unique opportunity to develop their specialist teaching interests via our range of degree programmes and in particular our MSc in Shipping and Logistics which has been running very successfully since the 1990s and attracts students from all over the world.

At Newcastle University we hold a silver Athena SWAN award in recognition of our good employment practices for the advancement of gender equality. We also hold a Race Equality Charter Bronze award in recognition of our work towards tackling race inequality in higher education REC.

In addition we are a member of the Euraxess initiative supporting researchers in Europe.
