Medical Project Director

We currently have an exciting opportunity to work in a fast paced, high performing Medical Affairs team as a Medical Project Director, reporting into the Head of Project Management. This is a critical role which will be responsible for leading and developing a team of Global Medical Affairs Project Managers as well as having Project Management accountabilities.

This role will have accountability in leading a team of 4-6 Medical Project Managers and driving consistent ways of working within Global Medical Affairs through the development of deep skills and capabilities in the art of Project Management as it relates to Medical Affairs. This team leader role will also lead by example through asset specific Project Management accountabilities. The role has global coverage with frequent Regional, LOC, Commercial and Development interactions.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Team Leader:

  • Actively participate in the Global Medical Operations & Project Management Leadership Team as Leadership Team member and work to develop strategic priorities and aligned goals for the new centralized organization
  • Manage a team of 4-6 Medical Project Managers that are deployed to support the wider Global Medical Affairs organization
  • Work collaboratively with other Team Leaders and the Head of Global Medical Operations & Project Management to deliver on capability building expectations and ensure best practices and learnings are implemented and embedded routinely
  • Create and co-lead a Medical Project Management community of practice aimed at sharing best practices, a platform to work through challenges and a mechanism to stay informed of important business topics
  • Manage team performance by supporting the development, evaluation and follow through on quantitative and qualitative KPIs agreed by business partners
  • Support the creation of a “blueprint” for the project management support framework for Regional/LOC partners as a mechanism for driving a consistent approach and ways of working through the GMA organization
  • Work individually with team members to create well thought through career development plans and check in on progress regularly to ensure delivery against annual goals
  • Accountable for supporting the development and evolution of resourcing principles and forecasting assumptions across GMA to strengthen reliability of integrated resource management & downstream decision making

Asset level Project Management:

  • Fully aligned and integrated within Therapeutic Area, understands strategic direction and disseminates within MAE
  • Secretariat for Global Medical Affairs Team (GMAT), Integrated Evidence Team (IET-C2FL onward) and individual working groups which includes planning IPO agendas, meeting facilitation, capturing, and circulating meeting minutes, documenting decisions and following up on actions to resolution with all information archived in an appropriate team repository (TeamSite) for team reference
  • Supports team in medical plan/Business plan creation (strategy) and Global to Local execution (tactics)
  • Supports planning alignment within Medical (asset plan), Commercial (ignite/launch excellence) and R&D (Medicine Development Plan) as appropriate
  • Drives development of variable budget and headcount on basis of Medical Affairs activity
  • Accountable for evidence generation tracking of study milestones and financials, discusses progress regularly at IET meetings and flags challenges & opportunities for the team to address
  • Supports the planning for external facing activities including ad boards, patient engagement, and standalone GSK meetings
  • Supports demand/capacity/deployment reporting for the asset and works with medical leaders to contextualize the data for senior leader review and decision making
  • Tracks and communicates progress against asset level objectives to medical teams as required
  • Supports the embedding of consistent and compliant ways of working in the team including risk management, audit readiness and responsiveness
  • Partners closely with GMA business operations to maintain awareness of enterprise activities and supports pull through and execution of business-critical deliverables at the asset level

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Bachelor’s degree in life science or business.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience within the pharmaceutical industry or related industry and minimum of 3 years’ experience in Project Management roles
  • Experience in managing people and developing talent both directly and indirectly through coaching and mentoring.
  • Demonstrated matrix leadership, influencing, strong facilitation, stakeholder management, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Proven experience with high degree of agility to function effectively in ambiguous and complex environments.
  • Record of accomplishment of building strong internal and external networks.
  • Experience with planning systems like Planisware or similar.

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Master’s degree, PhD and/or MBA or other advanced degree.
  • Understanding of core Medical Affairs processes (e.g., Medical Planning, Scientific Engagement Planning, Copy Approval) is preferred.
  • Project Management Certification or related demonstrating commitment to continued education in this discipline.
  • Understanding of the lifecycle of pharmaceutical drug development and commercialisation.
