Job description

We are looking for a patient focused Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) to join our Haematology/Blood Transfusion service team at Royal Brompton Hospital, located in the London Borough of Chelsea. The successful candidate will support our small team in the day to day running of the Haematology and Blood Transfusion. The successful candidate will be rotating between Haematology and Blood Transfusion.

The successful candidate will be able to work efficiently and independently carrying out their daily tasks whilst being aware of laboratory priorities. It is essential that they are also a good team player. The candidate will have excellent communication skills and be able to manage their time to keep to deadlines.

There is no direct training route to become a BMS.

  • The post holder’s main responsibility include: sorting samples by test and lab number, labeling and booking in of samples, generation of worklists, disposal of samples, transcribing results. Collection of blood units from satellite fridges, monitoring Fridge/freezer's temperature. Dealing with receipt of reagents/consumables and correct handling of their storage. Regular simple maintenance of some analysers/equipment such as cleaning and replenishing /loading some reagents.
  • The post holder will also be responsible for making reagents and waste disposal within the laboratory. Loading blood film staining machine and filing blood films. The post holder will monitor stock, keeping the stock management system up to date.
  • The post holder will display time management skills and be able to organise their own work to meet set deadlines and assist other staff with tasks as required.
  • They will comply with UKAS ISO15189 standards and follow the quality management system.
  • The post holder will work in a team and will communicate effectively with other team members, senior staff and other grades of Trust staff.
  • They will be required to communicate with parties outside of the trust such as contractors and other NHS workers, relaying information where needed.
The post is based at the Royal Brompton Hospital site. It is centrally located and close to South Kensington tube station . We are a small, friendly and hardworking team.
