Job title: Maternity Smoking Cessation Support Worker – 12 month FT/Secondment

Band 4 pro rata if part-time

Hours: 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

In this role you will support the maternity community, outpatient and inpatient teams to provide advice to service users in order to support them to safely and sustainably stop smoking. The role will have varied tasks both service user facing and administrative. You will have the opportunity to support within community-based settings as well as working with colleagues from other supporting agencies and collating data to evidence the success of stop – smoking initiatives.

The Smoking Cessation Support Worker (SCSW), working within community maternity services, will provide individualised support to women and will specifically deliver smoking cessation support to Women/Birthing People and their families in a flexible and innovative way. Beyond this, the SCSW will also engage with the wellbeing of the Women/Birthing People they interact with, promoting healthy lifestyles and signposting to other relevant services.

The SCSW will receive referrals from team members for smoking cessation support, will advise and will work proactively with all women and their household members who smoke during pregnancy. The SCSW will provide a variety of evidence-based stop smoking interventions including face-to-face, behavioural support and pharmacotherapy, group sessions, digital and self-help support, use of e-cigarettes and telephone and texting support. The SCSW will work closely with others as part of the wider pathway to support smoking cessation and smoke-free households including carbon monoxide testing; risk perception interventions; and recording, collating and monitoring smoking and quit rates and client progress.

Undertake the relevant training to qualify as a smoking cessation advisor and maintain the skills and knowledge as necessary through participation in continuous professional development.

Coordinate and manage own caseload and appointment diary in line with service delivery requirements, line management will take place jointly but the Community Midwifery Team Leaders.

Deliver support to patients through face-to-face group settings and telephone appointments autonomously.

Work closely with Midwifery Teams to facilitate referrals to the service and to provide ongoing feedback on patient care.

Complete statistical information to track progress of smoking cessation initiatives in the local Trust and the wider community of Milton Keynes, this will include collecting data for local and regional performance dashboards as well as producing outcomes of audits related to the uptake of smoking cessation.

Keep up to date on national and local policies, strategies and guidance relevant to health promotion and behavioural support such as the Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle Version Two (SBLCBV2).

Identify and approach Women/Birthing People regarding public health brief interventions, advice, conversations, and behavioral interventions in a variety of different settings. These may be in a clinical area or home.

Receive smoking cessation referrals from midwives within the teams following booking and other antenatal visits.
