London Underground Signal Engineering
Level 3
Apprenticeship Standard: Railway Engineering Technician
Location
London
Duration
3 years
Salary
£23,404
What Qualifications will I gain on completion of this Apprenticeship?
You will achieve a Level 3 Diploma in Rail Engineering (Signalling)
Fun Fact-
Signalling is one of the key safety strategies on our lines, keeping trains at a safe distance apart at all times. Since 1863, we have used signals on London Underground to keep our passengers safe and the trains running on time, and we are currently in the process of upgrading our signalling systems across the network; an exciting time to join us!
Job overview
Our Engineers focus on the assets that form the foundation of our transport system. London Underground’s network covers a vast area from zones 1-9 and 11 different lines. With many interchanges and pressure on our network to be constantly “on”, ensuring our lines are running safely and to capacity is the responsibility of our signalling engineers. Advancements in technology are making this role increasingly interesting, you’ll be working on one of the world’s oldest transport networks rolling out the most advanced technology, a truly unique opportunity.
What will I be doing?
As an apprentice you will have the opportunity to learn from experienced and qualified staff on your 3 year development programme, which will be made up of up to 12 placement rotations and include career path-specific signalling courses. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills, experience, and knowledge to excel in a successful career. We understand that everyone’s career is different, so every apprentice’s journey will be completely unique.
You will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience across our network, following a plan set by your Apprenticeship Development Manager. You will be expected to work across different lines, in different zones and attend mandatory competence-based progression courses as you develop and learn. Some of the depots that you will be working from include: Leyton, Stratford, Acton, Barking, Lambeth and Baker Street
Where can this career take me?
The apprenticeship is just the start of your career! Upon successful completion of this scheme, you could roll-off into a Support Technician role which could lead to further career development opportunities such as Technical Officer, which is supported by the courses that you achieve during the scheme.
There will be plenty of opportunities and support on your personal development throughout the duration of your apprenticeship. A number of our senior members of staff started off as apprentices and have worked their way up to executive level so possibility will always be at your fingertips. Success has no limits!
Once you roll-off you will be supported and encouraged to work towards the appropriate licences that will allow you to become a member of the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers (IRSE)
You’ll also have opportunities to complete additional training courses. These will vary from soft skills training to technical skills training.
What training and support will you get?
You will be working towards a Level 3 Diploma in Rail Engineering Technician (Signalling). Typically, you will be required to attend college in block release; this will be worked into your plan by your ADM.
Whilst on the scheme, we’ll support your technical development through a wide range of on-the-job practical experiences and placements. We’ll also support your professional development through a combination of classroom-led training courses, online training courses, mentoring opportunities, and structured networking opportunities. You will receive one-to-one support throughout the programme from your scheme sponsor and your Line Manager. You’ll also be connected to a ‘buddy’ who will be a more experienced apprentice from the scheme.
What do we look for?
