An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and energetic individual to join the busy Microbiology Department at Scunthorpe General Hospital as a biomedical scientist/trainee biomedical scientist (AfC Band 5 ). The department is part of Path Links which is a networked NHS Pathology Service providing a 24/7 service offering a wide range of diagnostic investigations on tissue, blood, and fluid samples across Lincolnshire, North & North East Lincolnshire and two large acute hospital trusts. We are also part of the Midlands East 2 (ME2) NHSEI pathology network and provide a 24/7 Covid-19 PCR service across Lincolnshire, North & North East Lincolnshire and in support of the East Midlands.

The successful candidate will be HCPC-registered (band 5 BMS) or working towards their registration (trainee BMS). Following orientation & familiarisation with our working procedures the post holder will be an integral part of the Microbiology department, responsible for processing, reading, interpreting and reporting on a wide variety of samples using both manual and automated systems in routine and serology & molecular areas of the department. Analysers in use include Iris iSprint urine analysers, Vitek 2, BactAlert blood culture system, BacTAlert rapid TB liquid culture, Roche 5800 PCR analysers, Cepheid Genexpert, Qiagen Qiastat, & Diasorin Liaison XL. A tender for MALDI-TOF is currently in progress. Serology & molecular work, mycology and TB are centralised at Scunthorpe. The role will also include managing telephone calls from clinical trust operational staff. HCPC-registered candidates will also be required to take part in a 24/7 shift rota which will include some evenings, nights and weekend & bank holiday working. Trainee candidates will be expected to work some weekend day shifts during their training and once this is completed, and once HCPC registered, they will take part in the 24/7 shift rota. Successful applicants will also be expected to support the department in aspects of quality management, including maintaining UKAS accreditation through compliance with training competencies and organisational procedures and policies.
