We have an exciting opportunity for two Biochemists to join our GSK Enzyme Engineering and Biocatalysis group based in Stevenage, UK.
As a biochemist, you will be responsible for supporting our work developing new enzymes for the production and modification of nucleic acid products with applications across the full GSK portfolio. Working closely with project teams, you would develop assays for understanding and improving enzymes of interest, identify novel enzymes for the synthesis of complex oligonucleotide products, and help support enzyme evolution programs as part of an interdisciplinary team of experts.
The role is fast-paced and dynamic, you will thrive in this environment if you are able to effectively manage multiple priorities, communicate your recommendations clearly and enjoy working in teams.
In this role you will
- Be responsible for a wide range of activities supporting our directed evolution workflow on a variety of protein engineering activities.
- Identify new ligase, and other nucleotide and XNA engaging enzyme variants to support our portfolio
- Develop appropriate assays for nucleic acid molecules to screen and identify improved enzyme variants in high throughput
- Understand enzyme mechanistic details of reaction kinetics
- Design experiments, collecting and analysing data using programs such as MS Excel, TIBCO Spotfire and bespoke software tools to inform decisions
- Support scale up activities for generation and use of enzymes
- Interact with partners in discovery, development, and manufacturing to identify and pursue enzyme opportunities
- Generate conclusion reports, present data in team meetings & participate in writing of abstracts & publications
- Conduct scientific work programs and make contributions both independently and as a member of a team with other R&D staff
- Maintain customer focus, motivating self, and demonstrating a high degree of urgency
- Exhibit flexibility, being open to new ways of working
Why you?
Qualifications & Skills:
We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant life sciences or chemistry course
- Practical laboratory experience of the identification of enzymes to perform reactions of interest, and the optimization of those enzymes under synthetically relevant conditions
Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
- Practical laboratory experience with nucleic acid-modifying enzymes such as ligases, polymerases, oligonucleotide synthetic enzymes, phosphatases, kinases,
- Familiarity with lab automation equipment and its use in high throughput experimentation with recombinant enzymes
- Experience with high throughput assay development, Design of Experiments, etc.
- Demonstrated ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams, displaying excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to analyse and visualize large multidimensional datasets
- Demonstrated excellence in the end-to-end execution of directed evolution projects including enzyme identification, library design, generation, and screening
