Job description
POST: Practice Nurse QUALIFICATIONS: Registered General Nurse (Membership of a professional body essential) GRADE: G Grade RGN, with at least two years post-registration experience, and having completed relevant post base courses such as Practice Nurse and/or Family Planning. BASED AT: Surgery ACCOUNTABLE TO: General Practitioners PROFESSIONALLY RELATES TO: Nurse Adviser to FHSA; Director of Nursing Services Community. JOB SUMMARY To provide nursing services to patients of the practice, including treatment, screening and advice within the professional competence of the post-holder. (Extra training will be provided before new duties are undertaken).
The post-holder will work in accordance with the UKCC Code of Conduct. KEY TASKS (or functions) 1. Provide nursing treatments to patients in participation with general practitioners or independently to agree protocols. 2.
Provide general and specific health screening to the practice population (with agreed protocols), with referral to general practitioners as necessary. 3. Advise patients on general health care and minor ailments with referral to general practitioners as necessary. 4.
To provide assessment and carry out screening procedures including cervical cytology as agreed and documented by G.P.s. 5. To have knowledge of overall nursing management of chronic diseases. 6.
To undertake health education and counselling of patients as required. 7. To have responsibility for setting up systems of regular review and formulating practice protocols. 8.
Assist in providing a family planning service. 9. Maintain supplies and equipment used. 10.
Maintain accurate patient records and statistics. 11. To have a working knowledge of the practice computer 12. To provide full immunisation programme and advice for infants, adults and travellers, according to agreed protocol.
13. Record, interpret and explain patients pathology results. 14. Interpret smear results and inform patients by letter or telephone call.
15. Maintain cold chain and safe storage of vaccines record fridge temperature every day. 16. Maintain safe storage of class A drugs according to agreed protocol.
17. Health professional present during clinic times to observe and familiarise themselves with working practices. 18. Mentoring colleagues returning to practice nursing.
19. Assumption of training duties with regards to colleagues asthma course. 20. Management of minor illness diagnose and treat according to agreed protocol.
21. Initiating insulin to Diabetic Type 2 patients in general practice. 22. All such other tasks as may, from time to time, become necessary.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 1. To provide assessment, screening and treatment services which are relevant to patients and their families. 2. To participate in the administrative and professional responsibilities of the practice team.
3. To assist in the formulation of practice philosophy, strategy and policy. 4. To assist in the provision of general practitioner services.
5. To liaise with Health Authority staff in hospital and community, social services staff and voluntary organisations, to provide an adequate service for patients. 6. To work with other members of the staff and assist in the smooth running of the practice.
7. To maintain professional development by attending courses and study days as arranged with the general practitioner(s). All practice staff should be aware of their responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act (1974) This job description will be subject to periodic review and amendment in consultation with the post-holder.
