The role of Library Manager is diverse, where two days are rarely the same, and requires a flexible approach and use of your own initiative. The role includes line management of a team of library assistants, monitoring performance and supporting them to develop in their role.
A week could include planning and creating staff development activities; banking income; managing staff rotas; inducting a new library assistant; and flexibly dealing with ad-hoc issues as they arise. The role is highly variable and allows opportunity to contribute to larger refurbishment projects as well as personally identifying and developing smaller projects that will benefit the delivery of library and customer services.
An excellent Library Manager has strong people management skills, working effectively with staff and customers to provide a great service. They are able to manage a varied workload in a busy environment, taking responsibility for the day-to-day management of a library, and the staff within them. Success in the role relies on a range of transferable skills and does not require specific experience of working in libraries.
We are looking for candidates who:
- Have good customer service and communication skills
- Have ICT skills and an interest in further development
- Have experience in staff training and management
- Are self-motivated and able to prioritise their workload
- Are able to defuse and resolve incidents
- Are keen to develop services and input into business planning
The role is full-time and includes working every other Saturday, for which a day off in the week is given.

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.
Work Permits: we may be able to obtain a Work Permit for this post but this is subject to meeting the requirements of the UK Border Agency’s Points-based Immigration System.
