Job description

The job itself

Are you looking for a role that’s packed with variety, where you could be working on anything from poetry competitions, the development of a health agenda, children’s literature festivals to analysing statistics? Could our Librarian opportunity be the next step in your career? You might be surprised to learn that you don’t need experience working in a library to apply.

We’re recruiting a Librarian to join our team based at North Bridlington Library. With 23 library sites, including joint library and customer service centres and a mobile library fleet, the library service has a strong physical presence across the authority. We’re passionate about empowering people and this post is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to manage multiple staff teams whilst being involved in a whole host of health and wellbeing related projects for adults, making a real difference to local communities.

Reporting to the Operations Manager the successful candidate will be responsible for the supervision of 9 staff members and undertake monthly visits to sites in Flamborough and Market Weighton. You will also be required to support other staff teams, librarians and senior managers as required. With lots of variety the role is fast paced and not just about books and literacy. It’s about staff and resource management, encompassing wider learning, promotion and development of health & wellbeing initiatives, encouraging the use of online technology to our customers, business planning, income generation and future service redesign. Duties can include:

  • managing staff, library service points and resources
  • developing highly motivated and skilled teams
  • supporting authority wide projects and initiatives
  • taking responsibility for specific health and wellbeing projects in line with your experience & expertise
  • Keeping abreast of new developments & resources
  • finding new and innovative ways to engage with the community
  • establishing and develop effective working relationships within the council and externally

Previous experience within a library is not necessary as full training will be provided. This is an ideal opportunity for anyone who:

  • has team working skills but able to work on own initiative and unsupervised
  • has the ability to manage staff
  • is educated to degree level
  • has organisational skills
  • Is enthusiastic and willing to learn, to build on ideas of their own and others

In addition to being able to work in one of our desirable library facilities, for those who have a passion for literature and learning, we value a healthy work life balance, we offer a number of employee benefits, we provide extensive training and offer places at exhibitions and conferences for professional development.
