Job description
The award-winning School of Arts & Creative Industries (SACI) at Edinburgh Napier University hosts a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and plays an active part in the creative industries across Scotland.
We are widely recognised for our expertise and excellence in creative practice, enhanced by extensive international collaboration, providing both staff and students with the opportunity to work and study worldwide.
We are the top UK modern university for Art & Design (1st of 62 - The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021) and the top UK University for Film Production & Photography (1st of 67 - The Guardian University Guide 2021).
Our connections with many of the UK’s best design agencies mean students and staff work closely with industry throughout their degrees and our undergraduate students exhibit their work at our annual Degree Show and national graduate showcases in London, often winning multiple awards.
As such, we are expanding our acclaimed suite of design programmes by recruiting a Lecturer in Product Design, to join the team at our Merchiston Campus.
The Role:
This role will provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your skills in sketch ideation (in 2D and 3D) and physical prototyping using both hand workshop and digital (3D printing, laser cutting) tools, to communicate a “conceive – prototype – test – iterate” mindset to our students.
You will be in an excellent position to use your skills and experience to confidently teach parametric 3D CAD software (ideally Fusion 360 or Solidworks) and rendering software such as Keyshot. Knowledge of alternative modelling strategies such as sub-divisional surface modelling or Gravity Sketch would also be an advantage.
You will also have the remit to develop your research interests while delivering student centred learning across all levels of our design programmes, using your previous experience of teaching Product or Industrial Design at HE level to deliver a human-centred approach that prioritises user research and feedback.
Furthermore, you will be given the opportunity to take responsibility for developing our existing teaching and research specialisms, to further enhance the student experience and the University’s reputation from a global perspective.
The role will be primarily focused on teaching Product Design students and will give you the opportunity to collaborate with a number of stakeholders, utilising your ability for cross-disciplinary working and general commitment to collaboration across the University and beyond.
What we will need from you:
We are keen to consider applications that have an interdisciplinary strength. We are looking for someone ambitious and enthusiastic, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team supporting others.
Examples of work (your own and that of taught students) will be required for interview presentations.
You will also need:
- A Postgraduate or Undergraduate degree, demonstrable subject expertise in the area along with relevant practice experience in the field
- Experience of using Adobe Suite
- Demonstrable experience of teaching Product or Industrial Design at HE level and evidence of a professional academic profile alongside a commitment to sustained continuous professional development
