Royal Mail are looking for a Lead Transport Manager (North West Hub) to lead the safe and legal operation of the fleet and distribution operation. Accountable for the leadership of managerial and frontline teams you’ll ensure efficient management of the transport operation within the parcel hub.
About the role
As a Lead Transport Manager, you will lead a team working strategically to achieve results. You will drive goals forward through strong planning, consistent follow up and always involving your team. You’ll lead a team of Transport Managers who in turn lead their front-line teams with Drivers of large goods vehicles (17.5tn and above). First and foremost, you will be responsible for the safety and wellbeing of your team through adherence to safety policies, procedures and regulations. As a natural leader, you will ensure that compliance with all legislative requirements is met.
Delivering efficiencies and with pipeline performance and continuous improvement always in mind, you’ll ensure effective distribution duty planning and overall cost and efficiency controls aligned to the optimised network. This will be done through utilising balanced scorecard/key performance Indicator metric outputs. This will also involve the review of fleet utilisation in response to operation, maximising efficiency opportunity whilst ensuring efficient container flow plans are in place.
As the site ‘O’ Licence holder with a Certificate of Professional Competence, you will ensure we are legally compliant with national governing bodies, adhering to specialist legislation to run the North West hub. You’ll professionalise distribution, ensuring operational work plans are achieved and that our pipeline optimises the flow of parcels and mail, whilst maintaining compliance with business policies, national work plan and Standard Operating Procedures.
You’ll lead the effective application and deployment of business standards, policies and agreements – coaching managers where applicable. Your people skills will enable you to coach and mentor your team effectively, via assessments and 121 meetings, while ensuring strict compliance to UK Road Transport Legislation.
Using your excellent communication, influencing and stakeholder management skills, you will build effective relationships with key stakeholders, both internally and externally. Working closely alongside trade union representatives, you’ll be responsible for the overall budget for your area, the KPI’S and leading and inspiring a team of managers and frontline workers in a unionised environment.

About you
With a successful track record of managing a fleet of 50+ you’ll have experience leading a team across a regional area, ideally within large scale parcel or mail operations, transport or logistics industry. The ideal candidate for this role will have expert level knowledge of UK Road Transport Legislation, a detailed understanding of Network Planning tools and pipeline successfully through periods of change leading on Continuous improvement projects.
An inspirational leader you’ll have brilliant negotiation and consultation skills and preferably have worked with Trade Unions before. You will feel comfortable when coaching and mentoring others and you will have strong analytical and decision-making skills. Holding a Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) for the site you manage is essential.
