Job description

Role Summary

The KPMG Delivery Network (KDN) operates through a number of UK resident companies. Most of the VAT compliance therefore relates to UK VAT. However, these UK entities have a number of permanent establishments for direct tax purposes which does raise the prospect of KDN having other non-UK indirect tax obligations. In particular, KDN is registered to GST/HST and also Quebec Sales Tax in Canada. KDN also operates through a number of Delivery Centres, which are tax resident in various countries, such as Argentina, Costa Rica and Malaysia. The indirect tax compliance for these entities is handled by the local KPMG offices. UK VAT is handled via outsourcing of book-keeping functions to KPMG Hungary and outsourcing of VAT compliance to KGS Hungary.

We are looking for a full-time VAT Manager with a strong knowledge of indirect tax compliance work.

Responsibilities
  • Working with the overseas finance/book-keeping function and VAT compliance team to ensure timely submission of returns
  • Reviewing all UK returns to ensure they are correct including but not limited to checking the coding, etc.
  • Advising on and reviewing the VAT systems and processes to ensure they are efficient and comply with HMRC's Making Tax Digital strategy
  • Driving technology and process improvements to indirect tax related processes
  • Assisting the Toronto based Finance Team with reconciling the returns to the general ledger, including the indirect tax control accounts
  • Handling all UK VAT enquiries including requests from tax authorities concerning indirect taxes
  • Ensuring that proper training is in place for the overseas teams to facilitate compliance
  • Liaising with the overseas finance/booking keeping function and other KPMG offices providing local tax returns to ensure the correct information is provided and returns are correctly filed on time and the related payments are processed
  • Monitoring compliance and performance of the overseas VAT compliance teams
  • Working with the Business and Finance Functions to ensure that any new indirect tax liabilities are identified and compliance facilities are correctly put in place
  • Acting as the first point of call for queries about indirect tax from the business and liaising with UK or overseas specialists where necessary to resolve any issues
  • Keeping the Head of KDN Internal Tax updated on all indirect tax matters and briefing other senior management as necessary

Skills and Experience
  • Demonstrable experience in a role with significant VAT accounting responsibilities, specifically in data management and reporting
  • Be experienced at using different accounting systems and working with offshore Finance providers
  • Competence in extracting information from accounting systems, and reconciling data to the general ledger
  • A good understanding of UK and European indirect tax rules, including invoice requirements, foreign exchange VAT accounting, place of supply / time of supply rules and reverse charge VAT accounting
  • Demonstrable experience of building excellent relationships with offshore Finance Providers, and ensuring that they consistently provide high quality work within pre-agreed deadlines
  • The ability to spot unusual issues outside your knowledge and experience, and to refer these internally for further consideration
  • Strong team player skills but also be capable of working methodically and independently
  • Strong attention to detail
  • An ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally, and used to working cross border via email and telephone
