We have a superb hybrid-based opportunity for a Junior Project Manager to join our Business Information Systems Programme Management Office (BIS PMO) team on a permanent (hybrid) basis.

Our Junior Project Manager opportunity is designed to support graduate level talent who aspire to learn and grow in the field of Project Management with the appropriate level of internal training and support to lead small to mid-sized IT and Business projects.

Within your team you will be guided by your line manager and colleagues within a strong collaborative ethos that will enable you to develop your project management understanding, knowledge, and skills by working on a broad range of projects. There are also wider groups for those at an early stage of their career which provides a wider peer network across the many design, advisory and consulting disciplines.

You will have the opportunity to work on one or multiple projects at one time (depending upon size and complexity) delivering technology enabled transformation to Smiths Group and its individual divisions. This role will work closely with and be supported by the PMO Director, PMO Portfolio Managers, BIS Business Engagement Managers, Key Stakeholders, BIS Counterparts and 3rd Party Delivery Vendors in successfully delivering Projects of varying nature:

  • Business transformational projects include Business Strategy Enablement, Site and Service Centralizations, Continuous Improvement Efforts, Regulatory and Statutory Compliance, IoT, Service Excellence Programs, Data Analytics and Collaboration.
  • Technology transformational projects ranging from Facilities Build Outs (Data Centre Migrations, Mfg / Office Site/Digital Forges), Security/Compliance, Infrastructure and Architecture, Cloud Strategies and Migrations, Digitalization, Applications and ERP Implementations, Solution Integrations, and Mergers/Acquisitions/Divestitures/Joint Ventures.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage small and eventually medium sized Business and Technology projects with the support of Portfolio Managers and the PMO Peer Network in ensuring project/program deliveries successfully support the achievement of defined objectives.
  • Establish and maintain the appropriate level of Governance and Control over Project Deliveries throughout the Project Lifecycle delivering business outcomes and deliverables set forth in the project charter.
  • Establish the appropriate level of Project Management rigor based on the Complexity and Impact of the project to the Portfolio and/or Programme. Set and continually manage project and program expectations while holding team members accountable to achieving the work according to schedule.
  • Responsible for the overall coordination planning the work, setting milestones and deadlines, assigning responsibilities, monitoring progress and reporting of project status to key stakeholders, team members and associated Program Management. This includes development and management all aspects of project engagement from planning, external vendor relationships, communications, resources, budget, change, risks and issues.
  • Oversees all aspects of project work to ensure that the goals and objectives are accomplished within the constraints of budget, schedule, and customer expectations. This includes managing the day-to-day project activities and resources. Monitor staff (internal and external) performance holding team members accountable for agreed upon deliveries while escalating issues in a professional, timely manner.
  • Provide on-site/virtual leadership for project team by building and motivating team members to meet project goals, adhering to their responsibilities and project milestones.
  • Full project life cycle ownership: successful project delivery will include full implementation from initiation to project closure.
  • Monitor, track and control outcomes to resolve issues, conflicts, dependencies and critical path deliverables
  • Develop and deliver progress reports and presentations to various audiences, including project team, sponsors, and key stakeholders. Provide regular and appropriately aligned status reporting against project milestones, deliverables, dependencies, risks and issues and decisions
  • Work creatively and analytically in a problem-solving environment demonstrating teamwork and innovation.
  • Ability to understand and work with External Vendors/Professional Services engagements (onshore and offshore) with the help of Leadership
  • Demonstrate and grow relevant functional and technical acumen to support how solutions will address Divisional goals. Seeks to understand interdependencies between technology, operations and business needs in aligning Technical and Business Readiness aspects of the project.
  • Manages project scope and changes.
  • Manages quality throughout the project lifecycle. Aligns with project success criteria and ensures team commitment throughout project and program life cycle.

The Individual

Minimum Entry Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in appropriate field of Project Management or related field.
  • Demonstratable previous project experience.
Personal Qualities:
  • You must be 18 years old before September 2023.
  • A passion for technology and project management.
  • Driven and determined.
  • Keen to develop knowledge of project management methodologies (e.g. Waterfall, PRINCE2, Agile etc) is desirable.
  • Developing verbal and written communication and people management skills.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • A natural passion to deliver against commitments.
  • Ability to communicate with peers.
  • Good attention to detail, highly organised.
  • Ability to work with general instructions on routine work and with detailed guidance on new assignments.
  • Willingness to learn new skills.
