The Reconstructive Prosthetics department are looking forTWOindividuals skilled and experienced in Reconstructive Science and Technology.
First position: Permanent, full time, Band 7 Reconstructive Scientist
Second position: Fixed term (18months), full time, Band 7 Reconstructive Scientist (fixed term with a view to be permanent)
The successful applicants will support Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Burns Surgery and Breast specialities, amongst others.
The successful applicants will be responsible for the management and provision of a clinical and technical Reconstructive Prosthetics Service including facial, body and implant retained prostheses. They will be responsible for and manage clinical, scientific and advisory services to patients, using implants, splints and prostheses.

Design, fabricate and apply profession specific and custom made head, neck and body prostheses and devices for patients with traumatic injuries, benign or malignant disease and congenital deformities of the craniofacial region.
Contribute to innovation, develop new techniques and advance the speciality of Reconstructive Prosthetics in the interests of patient care. This will include new innovations and techniques associated with the profession i.e. Computer Aided Design, Computer Aided Models, additive manufacture, material sciences and the use of 3D printing materials.
Design, fabricate and apply components and splints for the placement of craniofacial implants and attend operating theatres to advise on their application i.e. use digital 3D models/software to assess bone quality, ideal position of implants and retention systems for subsequent prostheses and design surgical implant guides for manufacture.
Organise patient clinics ensuring the availability of appropriate specialist and support colleagues to facilitate joint consultations and/or an environment appropriate to the patient’s medical and emotional requirements.
Attend multi disciplinary clinics and operating theatres.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES of both roles:
- The post requires an individual who is skilled and experienced in a wide variety of aspects of Reconstructive Science and Technology
- The post holder will support Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Burns Surgery and Breast specialities, amongst others
- The post holder will be expected to assist with and participate in the continued development of a digital design service
- The post holder will be responsible for the management and provision of a clinical and technical Reconstructive Prosthetic Service including facial, body and implant retained prostheses
- The post will necessitate access to and the completion of patient medical records and investigations
- The post holder will be required to liaise with senior and junior medical staff regarding patient work and the implementation of the digital design service
- The post holder will also liaise with commercial partners on design aspects and additive manufacture of custom implants when required
- The post holder will also be responsible for:
Ø Stock control
Ø Patient workload
Ø General upkeep of the laboratory
- The post holder will be responsible for and manage clinical, scientific and advisory services to patients, using implants, splints and prostheses
- To deputise in the absence of the senior Reconstructive Scientist/ Prosthetist and Manage
- Good communication skills are required to convey complex information on the design and application of medical devices and prostheses
- Required to accept patient referrals where complex treatment planning is solely devised and implemented. Analysis of each case will present different treatment options
- Must be able to plan and prioritise own workload and time-limited tasks. Will have to supervise others workload (student Reconstructive Scientists/visiting Reconstructive Scientists) where appropriate, which will include planning, organising and implementing multiple technical and clinical case
- Developed clinical, technical and scientific skills are required for the post holder. A high degree of accuracy must be maintained for all procedures. Some of these devices will be required for use in theatre involving the patient having to have a general anaesthetic. The replacement of extra oral (craniofacial) titanium implant components will have to be carried out either in the clinic or in theatre, working alongside the operating surgeon; this is a complex procedure for which the post holder will have to have developed clinical skills
- Have spatial awareness with an expert knowledge of anatomical shape, dimension and positioning when sculpting facial body prosthesis. Specific expert knowledge of colour, shade and hue is essential when producing custom made prostheses using silicone elastomer
Instruct and support the staff of the service and other healthcare professional colleagues in the practice of Reconstructive Prosthetics as part of the established North Bristol NHS Trust MDT, providing expert and high-quality care to patients

Undertake procedures on patients in clinics or to assist or be available to assist the operating surgeon in theatres as part of prosthetic treatment plans i.e. complex sectional impressions of congenital or acquired defects, replacement of craniofacial implant components and prosthesis substructures
Organise patient clinics ensuring the availability of appropriate specialist and support colleagues i.e. liaise with admin/clerical, nursing and medical staff to facilitate joint consultations and/or an environment appropriate to the patient’s medical and emotional requirements
Recognise presenting clinical situations that require an immediate second opinion by or referral to an appropriate specialist, i.e. possible indications of recurrent malignant disease
Liaise with consultants and other members of the clinical team regarding the provision of medical devices
Attend multi disciplinary clinics and operating theatres when senior colleagues are unavailable, to provide supported expert opinion on a range of clinical and technical issues
Communicate complex, sensitive conditions and treatment information to patients, carers and members of the MDT
Carry out procedures that involve skin/tissue preparations and identify tissue reaction i.e. the need for application of tissue conditioners and skin adhesives
Implement the Reconstructive Prosthetic Service and North Bristol NHS Trust policies and procedures regarding cross-infection control and the use of aseptic technique as required in clinic, operating theatre and laboratory environments
To observe and comply with current Health and Safety and COSHH legislation
To participate in and implement the Reconstructive Prosthetic Service Health and Safety policies, procedures and audit, including implementing the Medical Devices Directive/ Regulations
To participate in and implement the Reconstructive Prosthetic Service Risk Assessment system
To comply with Continuing Professional Development, (CPD) requirements of Statutory Registration and participate in North Bristol NHS Trust annual appraisal, maintaining a professional and personal development plan
Duties and responsibilities will be undertaken in accordance with the policies, procedures and practices of North Bristol NHS Trust, which may be amended
To undertake any other duties as reasonably requested by the Line Manager
Deliver a regional specialist facial and body prosthetic, burns rehabilitation (scar management) service and implant service; providing advice to consultant and medical staff on the pre-surgical/prosthetic treatment of patients; providing after care support and advice to this specialist group of patients
Contribute to service development and policy development of the Reconstructive Prosthetic Service; implementing and aiding developmental changes to improve departmental practices and procedures
Deputise in the absence of the senior Reconstructive Scientist and Manager
Supervision and training of student Reconstructive Scientists and the teaching of staff from other disciplines i.e. junior medical staff training sessions
Daily use of IT skills for the work booking and tracking system, using North Bristol NHS Trust systems for patient management
Carry out clinical trials, equipment testing and research and development projects. Will be required to carry out formal research, development and audit programmes within the scope of Reconstructive Science and Technology
Manages own workload and clinical activity, developing treatment plans by interpreting patient data, present research and professional policy
Assess referrals to the service from various surgical, medical and allied disciplines and action as necessary, in the best interest of patient care with regard to clinical need/priority, currently accepted best practice, social situations and resource availability
Responsible for planning, designing and executing unique prosthetic care pathways for patients
Responsible for arranging and attending joint clinics and case conferences with patients, consultants and their teams where prosthetic care is planned executed and/or modified
Observe and comply with the Medical Device Regulations (MDR) to ensure that the service performs all duties in accordance with its registration policy
Give professional/public presentations and scientific papers at national and international congresses and meetings, on behalf of North Bristol NHS Trust and the appropriate Professional Body, to profile and provide information about the Reconstructive Prosthetic Service and profession
Be responsible for and manage the safe use, handling and maintenance of specialised clinical and laboratory equipment and chemistry i.e. implant torque devices, airflow units, high speed cutting equipment, acids, monomeric liquids and evaporative solvents
Manage the day-to-day arrangements for the appropriate maintenance of equipment, building and engineering services
Undertake day-to-day stock control for consumable items and compile stock and non-stock requisition forms
Attend and complete any relevant mandatory and development training requirements
Registered Health Professionals Requirements
All employees North Bristol NHS Trust, who are required to register with a professional and/or statutory body to enable them to practice within their profession, are also required to comply with the governance of that body and maintain their registration. These include the GDC and/or HCPC.
