Creative all rounder required to join our small busy team.
Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust require a junior graphic designer who will become part of the Design, Photography & Reprographics Team, working on both the University Hospital Lewisham and Queen Elizabeth Woolwich sites.
The Department provides a comprehensive design, illustrative, photographic, video and printing service to the Trust as well as to external agencies.
We design and produce all types of media for use in marketing, teaching, research or publication. We work with all clinical specialties throughout the Trust and have close links with the Communications Department.
As well as design, we provide a wide range of clinical and non-clinical photography, including PR photography and video services to all specialties throughout the Trust.
Applicants must be versatile as the job can cover anything from layouts of forms or drug charts to creating and developing public health campaigns. A good knowledge of photographic and video processes is desirable. Familiarity with image database systems would be advantageous.
You will have a minimum of 1-2 years relevant post qualification experience. Although you will be working under the supervision of the Senior Graphic Designer, you will need to be able to demonstrate the ability to work without supervision and will need to have the following:
- BA Hons in Graphic Design with photography experience, or
- Excellent skills working with Adobe Creative Suite
- Knowledge of Microsoft packages
- Knowledge of video editing software (Adobe Premiere)
- Excellent communication skills

Job Summary:
The junior graphic designer is accountable to the manager of the Design & Photography Department although daily supervision will be the responsibility of the Senior Graphic Designer. The department exists to provide a comprehensive graphic design, illustrative, photographic and printing service to the Trust as well as external agencies.
Key Result Areas & Performance:
- To undertake the design, layout and production of all types of media used for marketing, teaching, research or publication.
- To produce a wide range of illustrations and diagrams using a variety of techniques, equipment and materials to demonstrate surgical, clinical and operative procedures, anatomical structures and equipment or any other subject matter in accordance with reasonable requests from our clients.
- To produce a wide range of statistical illustrations from data or roughs supplied including charts, graphs and pie charts or any other appropriate means of presentation.
- To produce an extensive range of print ready artwork including business stationary, forms, brochures and leaflets, booklets, posters and patient information material. This list is not exhaustive and any reasonable design request form our clients will be considered.
- To produce computer generated artwork from slides and files supplied, from clients’ instructions or to an original design.
- To undertake the design and oversee the printing of large format posters and to outsource these posters to be encapsulated.
- To undertake or assist in the development of websites, html emails, animated banners, other web imagery and content management systems.
- To liaise with print agencies to obtain accurate quotes for customers when work is to be outsourced for print. At all times the post holder should ensure the highest standard of finishing is obtained in accordance with the clients budget.
- To observe the requirements of each individual item of work with regard to quality, quantity and date required and to consult with senior colleagues as necessary to ensure the timely completion of the work.
- To undertake the finishing of all work undertaken by the department. This may include trimming, mounting, laminating, binding and encapsulating. This list is not exhaustive and any reasonable finishing request from our clients will be considered.
- To undertake clinical and non-clinical photography and to assist the department photographer where necessary. Whilst undertaking clinical photography and handling any patient information staff must at all times observe the strict confidentiality protocols of the Trust. There will be times when the post holder is expected to photograph, or assist in the photography, of both male and female patients often with little or no clothing on. At all times the dignity of the patient must be respected and the post holder must adopt a professional attitude.
- To ensure all patient photography is logged on the department database and all pictures are stored in line with the department’s standard operating procedures.
- To assist with any clinical or non-clinical videoing resulting from reasonable requests from our clients. To edit video shot by the department or supplied by the client as per the clients requirements and to output the finished film to a suitable medium.
- To be familiar with the general administrative routines of the department.
- To ensure the department is always up to date with technical developments with regards to the design industry and so able to offer the most professional services available within our budget.
- To perform any other reasonable duties, which are consistent with the overall objectives of the department and directorate.
The primary client of the department is the Trust but work is also accepted from any other Trust, private companies and individuals.
The post holder is expected to meet with clients to discuss their needs and advise them about the ways the work can be undertaken. They will then need to decide the best way to proceed with a project. At all times the senior graphic designer will be available to discuss work with and to offer advice where necessary. Throughout the project the post holder will be responsible for liaising with the client, providing proofs, making amendments and sending work to the print company.
The post holder is expected to be able to work on his or her own as well as working as a member of the team depending on the specific project. The senior graphic designer will help guide their work and will supervise them should the need arise.
There are regular staff meetings with the whole team to ensure all members are aware of which project are on-going and to discuss any problems.
Financial
The post holder will be required to contact our print suppliers to discuss requirements of print jobs and to obtain quotes. The department runs as a business and as such, with the information provided by the print company, the post holder will be expected to provide quotes for our client for the entire job including the design work. Jobs must be entered and administered accurately using the department job management system so that workflow can be tracked, invoices generated and information stored.

3. Offer advice to clients to encourage them to choose the most cost effective and suitable process to produce their work after listening to their requirements
4. Negotiate with external print agencies to ensure the lowest price possible. If necessary to approach various agencies to secure a competative rate.
5. Explain the processes involved in design and print to customers in order for them to understand how jobs can be produced and how different methods will affect the costs involved.
1. When photographing or filming patients it is essential that a professional manner is observed at all times. Tact must be used when directing patients in the studio.
2. Attend meetings, giving presentations to various commitees regarding the work we are currently producing for them.
3. It is often necessary to discuss with doctors or colleagues patient photographs.
Ensure secure storage and authorised distribution of patient photographs
