Mars Space Ltd (MSL) is a SME established in 2007 and based in Southampton, UK, providing services and consultancy on space and plasma engineering and science. Our main areas of expertise lie in space propulsion, in particular electric propulsion, and the space environment
(in particular solar radiation environments).
Since its incorporation, MSL has been involved in a variety of R&D activities in collaboration with several commercial partners and agencies carrying out the design, manufacturing, testing, and modelling of different devices and prototypes. MSL offers high level consultancy in the space propulsion market, helping customers dealing with high TRL devices as well as with novel technologies to exploit.
Mars Space has demonstrated its capabilities in designing and testing a full propulsion subsystem for cubesats, developing advanced concepts like the Dual-Stage Ion Engine and components, in particular hollow cathodes. Our extensive experience and varied background of our team provide a unique blend of expertise, enabling our company to add value to a large range of diverse projects.
MSL is currently undergoing a multi-million-pound laboratory facility upscaling, such that MSL now boasts one of the largest EP testing facilities within the UK and Europe. The state-of-the- art facilities consist of multiple walk-in vacuum chamber systems, manufacturing facilities and with a cleanroom expansion under way.
For this position you will be working as part of a MSL Propulsion Engineering Team, based in our Southampton laboratory, and will report to a senior research Engineer. As a Junior Electric propulsion engineer you will be supporting the design, modelling, and testing of electric propulsion devices and/or of their components and assist in the production of the relative documentation. Finally, you will support communication and engagement with the customer and/or partners involved in the projects you are assigned to.
Person Specification
Essential Skills & Experience
- Bachelor's or master’s degree in a STEM discipline, such as
Aerospace/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or Physics/Mathematics
- Flexible and positive approach to working in a dynamic business environment.
- Knowledge of using a code-based program such as Python, MATLAB, LabView or engineering/physics-based program such as COMSOL
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Understanding of space propulsion related systems such as electric propulsion subsystems and technologies, either from internships or academic courses
- Experience of working in a multi-discipline team environment
- Experience with Computer-aided design (CAD) programs such as SolidWorks
- Understanding of project development cycles
