Job description
Rochester Independent College has an exciting opportunity for an IT Apprentice to join their IT provision!
Based in Kent, Rochester Independent College is a day and boarding school offering a distinctive alternative to both traditional independent education and the highly selective grammar schools. RIC aims to give students an enjoyable and successful experience of schools in an international, creative and inclusive environment with small classes and high-quality teaching and pastoral care.
OVERVIEW OF THE JOB
Rochester Independent College (RIC) makes extensive use of IT and believes that all technology should:
● enrich the learning experience
● remove barriers to learning and teaching
● be “invisible” to the user and
● reduce administrative burdens
To support these aims, the College has over 225 iMacs and MacBooks and 50 Chromebooks used by students and staff. Google Workspace provides our core learning platform, and all students and staff are issued with a Google account. The Adobe Creative Cloud Suite is used extensively, especially in our wide range of creative GCSE and A-Level courses. We have a campus-wide WiFi network and a fast, stable core network, providing a 10GbE fibre backbone and two 1Gb broadband connections. All services provided by the College are delivered through the cloud, with the only on-site server being a backup server, which backs up all data from Google Workspace.
This is a new position required due to the significant expansion of the College’s IT provision and ambitions and the successful candidate will be joining at an extremely exciting time. As well as a new student residential village due to open in September 2024 requiring extensive IT facilities, we are about to initiate a rollout of a 1-2-1 Chromebook scheme for all students in the Lower School from September 2023. The successful candidate will play an active role in the development and day-to-day management of these devices.
As well as these major projects, the role will include all aspects of first line support and will provide opportunities for the successful candidate to develop a range of other skills such as project management and software development.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
● Supporting all RIC stakeholders including senior leaders, support staff, teachers, students and parents
● Logging requests and incidents on RIC’s IT Service Desk system
● Dealing with requests and incidents in a timely and professional manner, or escalating to the Senior IT Engineer or Director of IT where necessary
● Deploying devices to new students and staff through the College’s Mobile Device Management (MDM) systems Mosyle or Google Workspace
● Maintaining the College’s Multi-Function Devices (MFDs), ensuring that enough paper and toner is kept in-stock so the College never runs out
● Maintaining the College’s Asset Register, ensuring that all College devices are recorded
● Issuing software licences and deploying applications through the MDM in accordance with the College’s policies
● Applying security patches, software updates and upgrades in line with the College’s patch management schedule
● Following all security policies to ensure the College is able to successfully achieve and maintain Cyber Essentials accreditation
● be committed to the safeguarding and promoting of students' welfare.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
● Ability to work independently and as part of a team
● Good written and verbal communication skills
● Troubleshooting and problem solving skills
● Ability to prioritise workload and work under pressure
● A flexible approach to work and a willingness to “muck in” where necessary
● An open, friendly and approachable nature
● A good sense of humour!
