Job Purpose
The University is committed to providing an excellent student experience for international students arriving to study in Glasgow.
The role of the Welcome Team is vital in ensuring new international students receive the appropriate assistance, information and support both pre arrival and once they arrive into the UK. The team is on hand to provide reassurance and guidance on settling into life here in Scotland and use their experience of being a student at Glasgow to assist our new international students.
The team will support the ongoing activities of the student engagement team during the start of the academic year to help deliver an excellent student experience.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Respond to a broad range of student enquiries relating to living in the UK and studying in Glasgow through various digital mediums and in person.
2. Deliver online social, cultural and information sessions to international students as part of the welcome and orientation programme.
3. Support students by staffing the international welcome desk on campus offering advice and guidance about student life in Glasgow.
4. Maintain a record of all students assisted, including the nature of the enquiry.
5. Assist with any other administrative procedures supporting the work of the International Student Support team.
6. Deliver on campus activities to new international students, such as guided walking tours of campus and the immediate West End area.
7. Create and contribute to digital content for International Student Support social media channels according to prescribed guidelines.
8. The Welcome Team Assistants may be asked to support other teams during the registration period and may be asked to assist with new measures and initiatives for the upcoming academic year.
9. Liaise with the Registration and Enrolment team (REST) to guide students to the correct team to resolve their query for all administrative processes relating to enrolment.
10. Be available to work occasional evenings / weekends as required. This will be limited to support certain activities such as airport and accommodation welcomes and evening social activities.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
A1 Registered or recently graduated student at University of Glasgow
A2 Excellent knowledge of the university campus, location of key student services and good understanding of university processes as experienced by new students.
A3 Familiarity with video conferring software such as MS Teams and Zoom.
Desirable
B1 Awareness of Cultural challenges faced by International Students coming to the UK
Skills
Essential
C1 Using MS Office packages, including Word and Excel
C2 Confidence in delivering online and in person sessions to large numbers of students
C3 Good communication skills to communicate and exchange routine information effectively
C4 Able to deal sensitively with students using tact and diplomacy
C5 Enthusiastic approach and ability to adapt to meet changing demands on the service
C6 Ability to remain calm under pressure

D1 Able to multi-task and work flexible

E1 Experience of working as part of a team
E2 Experience of using the internet and email
E3 Basic experience of providing a high level of customer service, providing direct support, advice and guidance, as appropriate, whilst also ensuring that students are aware of their responsibilities and actions to be taken

F1 Experience of working in a student facing role
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 3, £21,400 - £22,197 per annum, pro-rated to the number of hours assigned to, and worked by, you.
This post is offered on a part-time, fractional basis (minimum of 50 hours throughout the entire contract, no weekly minimum amounts are guaranteed) and is fixed term from mid-August to late October 2023.
Applications are restricted to current UofG students who will be continuing their studies with us during the next academic year or recently graduated students at University of Glasgow.
Hours may vary throughout the registration and enrolment period in order to meet demand and may include weekend or evening work, therefore there is a requirement for a flexible working pattern. Staff schedules are issued on a weekly basis.
