Together for a cleaner, healthier world.
Johnson Matthey, a FTSE 100 company, is a global leader in sustainable technologies specialising in catalysis, precious metal products, chemicals and process technology. With operations in over 30 countries, we employ more than 13,000 people. Johnson Matthey uses science to make the world cleaner and healthier. Over the past two centuries we have built our reputation and place as a global leader through quality, integrity, and innovation. Today, more than 93% of the group's sales come from products and services which provide sustainability benefits through the positive impact they have on the environment, resource efficiency and human health, but that’s not enough. We have ambitious plans for growth and need talented individuals to help shape and lead us into our next century.
As global action on climate change gathers pace, so does the shift to cleaner energy sources, such as hydrogen, to provide low or zero emission power for our homes, industry and transport. Johnson Matthey's technologies are already at the heart of enabling this energy transition and we are investing further in the Clean Hydrogen space. We want to strengthen Johnson Matthey's position at the forefront of the Hydrogen Economy. We are in a fortunate position that we have a long and successful history in Hydrogen and we plan to build on our well-established and solid foundations. We’re self-starters, people who take ownership and courageously embrace change to make things happen. We work in dynamic, evolving environments, anticipating changes and shaping our global markets; whilst striving to create entrepreneurial opportunities and value for our customers.
We are therefore seeking highly motivated Chemistry, Materials Science or Physics students to join our MEA Research team in our Hydrogen Fuel Cells facility in Swindon.
In this placement you will gain experience working in a world class facility whilst receiving support for your own personal and professional development.
Full training will be given to assist you in successfully undertaking your responsibilities.
We reserve the right to close the application process early if sufficient applications have been received. Therefore, it is advised that you apply early.
Role:
During your 13-month placement, you will support the other members of the team by carrying out experiments to help understand MEA properties and determine manufacturing routes. You will need to work independently to complete experiments designed for you initially, but as the placement progresses you will be required to have more input into the planning of the experiments.
Key responsibilities:
  • Assist in the preparation of experiment samples for both mechanical and electrochemical testing.
  • Prepare samples for ex-situ characterization techniques, such as microcopy and tensile testing.
  • Assisting in interpreting experimental results and planning next stages.
  • Ensure all relevant safety rules are followed
Are you the ideal candidate?
You will be:
  • Studying for a degree in Physical Science (Chemistry) or relative discipline
  • Able to demonstrate experience of working safely in a laboratory
  • Able to demonstrate experience of working within a team on projects
  • An effective communicator with the ability to build successful working relationships
  • A Self-starter and demonstrate an ability to manage your own time effectively
How you will be rewarded:
We offer a competitive compensation and JM Elements benefits package including bonus, excellent pension contributions and 25 days annual leave (varies for shift-based roles). Our JM Elements Benefits programme helps our employees understand and manage the JM benefits, as well as helping you focus on your overall wellbeing – for you and your family.
We use our inspiring science and technology to enhance lives. For those who are passionate about sustainable solutions and shaping our markets, we offer stretch and a wealth of diverse opportunities.
We’ll give you freedom to bring your whole self to work and be part of a team where difference matters and all voices are heard, that genuinely cares for you and where your contribution is appreciated. We’ll empower you to lean in and make things happen, to create solutions and value for our customers. United by our values and vision, we’re self-starters sharing the same values and accountability and always with a shared commitment to doing the right thing. We’re passionate about making a difference and delivering a better tomorrow for us and for you – a cleaner and healthier world, today and for future generations.
